The big trade-off to using ranged attacks is not only a fall in damage (though even that's debatable), but that you need to avoid melee. Having to spend an entire feat on negating that penalty is entirely justified in my mind.

Making it easier to use ranged weapons is always a plus. Contrary to what Leziad says, I believe this is useful, and it never should've been an Epic feat anyway. I mean, you can cast defensively to avoid AoOs, but using a bow defensively is a bit of another matter last I checked.

Another feat which allow you to do something uninteresting with your ranged weapon. As a final insult it has a BAB 6 requirement so you can't even grab it with a flaw or human feat, you need to take it when other much better feats become available.

That not High

Maybe moderate at best. --Leziad (talk) 14:26, 19 December 2016 (MST)

Reducing an Epic feat to a 6th-level feat and dumping half the prereqs of the original is a bit on the high level, though ranged weapons aren't nearly as powerful as spells. Zhenra-Khal (talk) 14:34, 19 December 2016 (MST)
TBH, it does remove the biggest downside of being a ranged character--that is, the fear of going into melee. I'd say that pretty powerful, all things taken into account. --Ghostwheel (talk) 15:05, 19 December 2016 (MST)
Precisely; And I'd use it for that very reason, for the same reason I'd used Shielded Casting. Both are incredibly useful. Zhenra-Khal (talk) 15:09, 19 December 2016 (MST)
This feat turn your bow into a slightly subpar melee weapon, except you still can't power attack with it or you know have all the good melee stuff on it. The downside of being ranged as far as im concerned is that you have to take like half a dozen feat to make it good. Feat tax to add damage, feat tax to ignore concealment, feat tax for shooting through enemies, feat tax so the weather don't bone you. So in fact this feat is contributing to the problem in a way. --Leziad (talk) 15:12, 19 December 2016 (MST)
People seem to forget what's so good about the bow, and what allows the barbarian to deal so much damage--full attacks. Without pounce or the like (which even then is stopped by difficult terrain and the like), most melee characters are limited to a single attack per round if they need to close in on a foe (or at higher levels, intelligent foes will eat an AoO so as not to eat a full attack). Being able to full attack with impunity is a pretty big deal. And I agree that the feat tax should be lowered, which is why we together have combined a number of them together here on the wiki, one example that comes to mind being my sharpshooter feat. --Ghostwheel (talk) 15:17, 19 December 2016 (MST)
I like Sharpshooter, it actually do what it should do as a ranged feat. It reduce the feat tax and add something extra (Dex to damage). Not this feat, you take this feat and it not interesting or compelling. At least if it like, allowed you to threaten adjacent opponents with your ranged attacks or something. Nevermind if you are a crossbowman, you provoke for reloading.
I also know how deadly ranged characters can be, but ultimately most of them have horribly boring build that are designed to just sponge as many feat as necessary and maybe start getting interesting by level 10 or so. All the while the caster is just destroying people left andd right and the barbarian just outdid their damage in a single leap attack. --Leziad (talk) 15:22, 19 December 2016 (MST)
As I'm currently building an archer class, this entire discussion is a bit odd to me. You're complaining Eiji didn't give you at 1st level something the official material reserved for epic characters, which is somewhat silly. I agree with this feat, with the exception that yes, I would like it if you could threaten enemies with your ranged weapon in this manner; It would be really nice if such threat extended beyond melee range, perhaps out to 5 feet per point of Dexterity bonus the wielder has. But beyond that, this is actually a pretty viable feat if I'm understanding everything correctly. Zhenra-Khal (talk) 15:31, 19 December 2016 (MST)
If you're looking for inspiration, I made a few archer-related materials that might grab your interest. There's also the snap shot tree from Pathfinder. --Ghostwheel (talk) 15:37, 19 December 2016 (MST)
Thanks Ghost; I'll pop over into the chat in a few if you're interested in discussing my ideas for this class; It's sort of like Soulbow, but not. Zhenra-Khal (talk) 15:40, 19 December 2016 (MST)
I am not complaining, but I don't think you understand the full ramification of locking something behind a high bab requirement. This is only available for a fighter or ranger at level 6th, which is a feat level and a fighter feat level, but there is also a lot of good feat that require bab +6. If you are playing a bow rogue or another mid bab class? It locked at level 9. Feats at mid levels are really important, I hold the strong opinion that a build stand on it feat and losing one of your mid level feat for something that could be replaced by 5 ft step is... silly. --Leziad (talk) 17:36, 19 December 2016 (MST)
