Ghostwheel opposes this article and rated it 0 of 4.
This rating refers to a substantially different version of the article, or concerns mentioned in it have already been addressed.
Permanent True Seeing is worth around 200k gold, is a hard counter to a ton of things, and thus I feel is inappropriate for 15th level characters at High level.

Rating Counterpoint[edit]

You can just buy or wish for a Hathran Mask of True Seeing, which costs only 75k. Additionally, you are level 15 and should have true seeing anyway. You also most likely have much more broken things to do, because you are level 15 and DnD has more or less broken down into gentleman's agreements 3 turns ago.

Otherwise, what do you think the changes should be? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vagrant (talkcontribs) at

First of all, Unapproachable East is a 3.0 book, not a 3.5 book, so balance is out of the window as far as that is concerned (see 3.0 Haste).
Second, a fair compromise IMO is to allow them to either cast True Seeing as a spell-like ability 1/day, or to let them activate True Seeing as a supernatural ability for a number of minutes per day equal to 1/2 their HD (with the duration does not needing to be consecutive, it can instead be spent in 1-minute increments). --Ghostwheel (talk) 19:45, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Ha, edit ninja'd. I agree with Ghostwheel here. Regardless of price, an item can be removed, stolen, broken, suppressed and more importantly identified as what it is and what it does by either the party or high-level NPCs. Whereas having powerful, always-on magical effects that can't be detected or dispelled is really powerful, even at 15th level. At 15th level the wizard can't even cast wish yet to nab that underpriced mask. Should definitely be an SLA or Su effect x/day for y duration. -- Spanambula (talk) 19:59, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
That sounds a bit underpowered. I mean, the actual Master Inquisitive class in the Eberron Campaign Setting can give you 1/day (as much AP as you want to pump into True Seeing, 2pts per additional use) as early as level 7. (You can qualify and enter the class at level 2, and it's only a 5 level prestige class.) Changing it to a (Su) is probably fine, but I honestly have a hard time being concerned that a level 15 wizard might run around with always on true seeing. But perhaps I'm missing something. I'll add the Gem of Seeing limit of 30 minutes per day so it functions more or less like the item itself. (Though honestly, you are level 15 and the wizard is running around with crap like planar binding and limited wish at this point, it's hard to care.) Vagrant (talk) 20:35, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Gem of Seeing requires a free hand to hold it up to your eye, can be stolen/broken/etc, and more. Plus, a single feat shouldn't be compared to 5 "wasted" levels of a meh prestige class. And I would definitely not allow it to be split into rounds, and would have a shorter duration. --Ghostwheel (talk) 20:43, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Are you kidding me? What kind of anti-fun GM would actually insist on that crap? This is a Tome-balance item, and Tome Fighters can a) afford gems of seeing, or just get a greater magic item with googles of true seeing - and b) they can foil action their ass off. It's a level 15 ability and the idea was to get rid of the craptastic class and replace it with a feat people would actually want to take. At level 15, you are fighting beholders in lairs with illusion everything - you can either take this feat, or buy some potions of true seeing to face those threats. I'm not sure what kind of threats you expect level 15 characters to face, but true sight is more or less mandatory at those levels. Vagrant (talk) 21:00, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Then put it at Very High balance rating. Tome characters are VH, not H in balance. That would fix it and take care of my original concern entirely, allowing you to re-make it permanent.
EDIT: Also, potions can at most be 3rd level, so no True Seeing potions. --Ghostwheel (talk) 21:08, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
And if it is going to be VH, I'd consider just making it usable at will (but still require an action to activate like the spell). Less book keeping on number of minutes used and such and still a pretty awesome ability. --Aarnott (talk) 21:32, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Balance changed to VH, and I adopted the text from the Greater Wondrous Ability True Seeing. Should be fine now. Vagrant (talk) 21:38, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
A minor comment, I suggest revising the prerequisites. There's no reason to have benefits for 1 HD if you can't meet the prereqs till level 3. --Sulacu (talk) 21:55, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Oh, that's a good point. I included them mindlessly as a c/p of the class writeup, that one was a glitch. Removed, and thanks for noticing. Vagrant (talk) 22:23, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
