Tapirien[edit]

The rotund tapirien are stocky dwarf like humanoid tapir people with prehensile noses and a perchance for the psionic. They are said to have originally been spirits from the Plane of Dreams who settled in the prime material and became mortal. Their connection to creatures such as the mo and drowzeeble are not yet verified.

Personality[edit]

Strange and mysterious, these fey creatures retain the strange, surreal, and uncertain nature they took when they were naught more than living dreams. A tapirien is rarely straight forward about anything, and they tend to drone on with their thoughts and speak in metaphor. This round-about behavior leads to deception weather for good or ill.

Physical Description[edit]

The tapirien are andromorphic tapir creatures that are short and stocky, built like dwarves, with the head of a tapir including their prehensile nose from which they claim they can "sense psychic scents" from. Their eyes are often half-closed in relaxation in even trying times, and they tend to be bald or have sparse hair and short fur covering their body. Colors vary, from "normal" animal colors to confused and bright patterns for those closer to their dreamborn origins.

Relations[edit]

Being mysterious does not often beget friends, and many are right to mistrust the tapirien. Even if they are not malicious, they are confusing. And those which do intend malice weave deadly plots under the cover of obscurity.

Alignment[edit]

Tapirien can be any alignment, but often end up in the extremes, especially in the case of chaotic behavior.

Lands[edit]

Once the tapirien were spirits of dreams, but have since become mortal fey in the material world. They end up taking spots where meditation and self reflection can occur such as in the wilds or on top of tall mountains. Some have actively become tied into the trope of the old wise man on the mountain, especially those who use their psychic potential to become diviners.

Religion[edit]

No gods are known to the tapirien, for what can the gods offer which they themselves cannot imagine?

Language[edit]

Tapirien speak Common and Sylvan.

Names[edit]

Tapirien names are "normal", for fey anyway, but often come attached with titles of some perceived worth. One cannot simply be "Bob" so much as "Bob of the High Mountain and Dancer in the Mist".

Racial Traits[edit]

  • -2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence or +2 Wisdom or +2 Charisma: Slow and fat, yet ever so keen in the mind, the tapirien is better at mental skill than physical prowess.
  • Fey (Anthro, Psionic): Psionic fey creatures, they are animal-like in their appearance.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a tapirien has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Tapirien base land speed is 20 feet. However, tapirien can move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armor or when carrying a medium or heavy load (unlike other creatures, whose speed is reduced in such situations).
  • Dream Link (Su): Tapirien are tied to dreams, and by touching a sleeping creature they can force a Will save DC 10 + 1/2 HD + their highest mental ability modifier or have their dreams spied upon by the tapirien for as long as they continue to concentrate, or they wake up. This invokes no control over the dream, merely an observation. However they can cast dream related powers or spells such as dream or nightmare in the same action they take concentrating. They also add the the dream and nightmare spells and the psionic versions as powers to whatever class spell or power list they possess at the appropriate level as class spells or powers. If it is already a class spell or power, they learn it for free or add it to their spells known as soon as that level of casting or manifesting becomes available.
  • Naturally Psionic: Tapirien gain 2 bonus power points at 1st level. This benefit does not grant them the ability to manifest powers unless they gain that ability through another source, such as levels in a psionic class.
  • Prehensile Trunk (Ex): The trunk of a tapirien is short but flexible. They can hold, but not wield, items in it as if it were a third hand. Checks which require unusually intense manipulation or fingers are done at a -2 penalty.
  • Psychic Scent (Su): The tapirien naturally have a scent for the supernatural. They may use detect psionics at will as a supernatural ability, and passively have scent which applies to psionic or magical items. This scent reveals magic, but no details other than them being enhanced.
  • Skills: Tapirien gain a +2 racial bonus to Autohypnosis, Concentration, and Psicraft checks.
  • Tactile Telepathy (Su): Tapirien can speak telepathically with any creature with Int 3 or higher with a range of touch, lasting as long as they maintain physical contact. In addition if a willing creature is touching them when they employ telepathy, divination, or clairsentience abilities they may treat the touching creature as the caster for the effects of the spell or power. For example, they can use correspond but have another speak over the correspond power.
  • Waking Sleep (Ex): Tapirien are awake even when asleep. They are not helpless and are aware of their surroundings out to a range of 30 ft, even if their eyes are closed. They cannot act other than making purely mental actions and are treated as staggered, but because many are psionic this permits them to often manifest in their sleep. However any power points consumed while resting will remain expended when they wake instead of being refreshed.
  • Automatic Languages: Common, Sylvan
  • Bonus Languages: Any (except secret languages)
  • Favored Class: Psion or Wilder
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1
