This rod of orichalcum-reinforced tin naturally absorbs magical energy from within nature. The colourful arcane crystals which adorn the rod's head are the accumulation of this absorption process over the course of many decades, resulting in a catalyst of great power. Those spellweavers with innate magic power or sublime understanding will find that the swirling mana currents within this catalyst resonate with their own arcane power, greatly empowering spells cast through it but at a tremendous cost of energy and mental focus.

Casting an arcane spell with a tin crystallization catalyst as the focus requires a full-round action and expends two spell slots of the spell's level or higher. A spontaneous caster simply expends two spell slots, but a prepared spellcaster will have to have at least one instance of the spell prepared, as well as expending a second prepared spell of the same level or higher. Any arcane spell so cast is enhanced in the following ways:

  • All variable damage sources are multiplied by 1½, as per empower spell.
  • The spell is heightened by 2 levels.
  • Any spell with a duration is extended.
  • Any spell with an area of effect has its area increased by 50%.

Due to the strain of casting through such an overbearing catalyst, the wielder becomes staggered for one round after casting.

Apart from its prowess as a catalyst for spells, a tin crystallization catalyst functions as a +3 orichalcum morningstar with spelltouch and ability striking in the same ability score that determines the save DCs of the wielder's spells.

Prerequisites: Craft Rod, Empower Spell, Heighten Spell, Extend Spell, Widen Spell, must have levels in a spellcasting class.
Cost to Create: 50,000 gp, 4,000 EXP, 100 days.
