You catch sight of a dim flicker ahead, illuminating a small figure slowly shambling towards you. As it draws nearer, the dim light reveals the twisted visage of a Tonberry. This small, green-skinned creature, measuring just over 3 feet in height, is draped in a nondescript, earth-toned, long-sleeved robe that reaches down to its ankles. Peeking from beneath the robe are plain brown shoes, while a modest-length tail, split at the tip, protrudes from the back.

Its movements are slow and deliberate, each step calculated with a malevolent intent that sends shivers down your spine. Its long, slender arms hang limply at its sides, one hand clutching a rusted, blood-stained kitchen knife, while the other holds a lantern emitting an eerie green glow. Grotesque shadows dance along the walls as the light flickers, casting an ominous shadow over the chamber.

Its striking yellow eyes, devoid of lids, jut out from its face, which lacks any discernible mouth or nose. The air grows heavy with a palpable sense of dread as the Tonberry draws closer, and an unsettling silence falls over the area, broken only by the faint echo of its slow footsteps.

A Tonberry is a quite small, unassuming looking creature that at first glance to characters unfamiliar with it, does seem to be a fairly harmless creature. Sneaky beings that slowly creep through the darkness carrying knives and lanterns. Their incessant, innocent stare stabs through opponents, pushing them over the brink of despair. Known as "Pugs" in some cultures, they stand 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall and generally weighing no more than 45 pounds. These green, robed fiends will slowly approach with no expression on their faces. They have round heads with small snouts. These fiends lurk in darkness, slowly drawing near those whose eyes meet theirs. They make their homes inside of caves or if possible, inside of the ruins of an underground castle.

Combat

A fiend that roams about by the light of its lantern. Don't be fooled by its tranquil demeanor. It's a vicious and persistent attacker. A Tonberry will move 10 feet every round in an attempt to close in on a target and use karma as often as possible, and at least once against each target possible during the course of a battle. After closing in on an opponent, or when an opponent approaches the Tonberry, it attempts to use Everyones Grudge. Once a target is dropped, it simply moves on to the next one.

Special Attacks

Chef's Knife: A Tonberry wields a small knife that was created and used by that Tonberry. In the hands of the Tonberry the blade acts as a small +1 dagger of Humanoid Bane. Unlike most weapons, the Tonberry's Chef Knife is Bane to all creatures of the Humanoid type, regardless of subtype. In the hands of anyone except the Tonberry that created it, the Chef's Knife acts as a small masterwork dagger, and will appear as such when an identify spell is cast on it as well.

The Tonberry's attack and damage information in the statistic block was calculated taking into account the +1 bonus to attack for size AND the +1 bonus on the Chef Knife, but not the bane ability of the Chef Knife, so against enemies of the Humanoid type, add +2 to attack and damage of the Chef Knife, as well as +2d6 damage.

Karma: When a Tonberry is successfully struck in combat for damage by any type of ability, up to twice per round, the Tonberry can choose to use Karma as an immediate action. When a Tonberry uses Karma, a purple and blue ghostly energy fires out from his lantern towards the target of his Karma attack. The Tonberry makes a ranged touch attack up to 60 feet against the creature that damaged him. If the ranged touch attack is successful, the Tonberry deals 1/2 of the damage dealt to him back to the opponent as untyped damage.

Overdrive

Everyone's Grudge: When a Tonberry is adjacent to an opponent whom he has successfully used his Karma ability on in the last hour, the Tonberry can attempt to use his Everyone's Grudge ability. To do this, as a full round action, the Tonberry must make a successful attack against the opponent. If successful, the opponent must make a fortitude save (DC = High Summoner's level + Tonberry's wis mod) or it dies. If the opponent makes the save, no other ill effects than the 1d3 damage from the Chef Knife occurs. This ability does not function on creatures without a constitution score such as constructs and undead, but does work normally on creatures with strange anatomies that are normally immune to critical hits or sneak attack, like oozes, plants and creatures with fortification. If a Tonberry attempts to use Everyone's Grudge and misses the attack, this does not count against his one use of Everyone's Grudge per summoning.
