Combat Defender

This is a tweaking/reworking to test some ideas out on the Defender (3.5e Class) that really wasn't quite up to my liking for playing personally. We'll see how this goes. Made a lot of changes so far. The highest levels haven't been touched on yet. Initial testing has been promising, but it still needs some modifications.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the combat defender.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A combat defender is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with all armor (heavy, medium, and light) and shields (including tower shields). Additionally, she gains 1 exotic armor or shield proficiency of her choice.

Defend (Ex): A combat defender is adept at guarding herself. At 1st level, she gains a Defend bonus of +1. This bonus increases by +1 at 5th level and every 5 levels after. Chosen from the list below, she gains 1 of the abilities listed, changeable at the start of her turn each round as a free action.

  • Aggressive Defend: Gain Defend bonus to attack and damage for foes threatening an ally that isn't you.
  • Opportunistic Defend: Gain an additional attack of opportunity per round equal to your Defend bonus. You still threaten for attacks of opportunity while taking a Total Defense action.
  • Staunch Defend: Gain nonlethal conversion equal to twice your Defend bonus.
  • Tactical Defend: If you haven't attacked on your turn, you gain your Defend bonus to your AC as a sacred bonus until the start of your next turn.

Bonus Feat (Ex): At 1st level and every 3 levels after (4th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 19th), a combat defender gains a bonus feat chosen from the following list: Improved Bull Rush, Improved Charge, Improved Disarm, Improved Feint, Improved Grapple, Improved Initiative, Improved Overrun, Improved Shield Bash, Improved Sunder, Improved Trip. She does not need to meet the prerequisites for these feats.

Alternatively, a combat defender may select any feat with Combat Reflexes as a prerequisite, however unlike the list above she must meet the prerequisites for those feats.

Quick in Armor (Ex): A 1st level combat defender is adept at dodging attacks, even in armor that normally restricts movement. She may increase the Maximum Dexterity Bonus to armor class for any armor she wears by 2. She no longer suffers a movement penalty for her armor's encumbrance and gains the benefits of the Endurance feat while wearing medium or heavier armor.

Nurse (Su): At 2nd level, the combat defender is able to channel bursts of positive energy to heal the wounds of herself and her allies. Once per day as a move action, she can heal a touched creature for a number of hit points equal to her defender level × her Constitution bonus (minimum of 1). She gains an additional use of this ability ever three levels thereafter. This ability has no effect on undead.

Surgeblade (Su): At 2nd level, combat defenders are more adept at channeling energy. As a full-attack action, the combat defender can make an attack and channel energy into her weapon, adding 1d4 per combat defender level of magic damage (overcoming magic damage reduction). At Base Attack Bonus +6, she may perform her Surgeblade as a standard action instead.

Combat Opportunist (Ex): At 3rd level, a combat defender takes advantage of her opponent's weaknesses. She gains Combat Reflexes as a bonus feat and may use either her Dexterity modifier or Constitution modifier to determine the number of extra attacks of opportunity granted by the feat.

Damage Reduction (Ex): At 3rd level, a combat defender has hardened from taking hits. She can shrug off a portion of the damage impacting her, gaining damage reduction 1/—. This increases by 1 every 4th level beyond 3. This stacks with similar damage reduction, such as that granted by barbarian.

Cover (Ex): At 4th level, a combat defender is able to guard her allies, provided they're close by. Any ally within 20 feet of the combat defender gains her Defend bonus.

Armor Momentum (Ex): At 5th level, a combat defender takes advantage of the armor bulk she's hauling. While wearing medium or heavier armor, she gains a +10 bonus to her movement speeds and the benefit of the Run feat.

Bulwark (Ex): At 5th level, a combat defender has learned to guard herself to shrug off attacks that do hit. While taking a Total Defense action, her damage reduction improves by 10.

Aegis of Purpose (Ex): At 6th level, a combat defender give her allies ground to move. A creature threatened by the combat defender does not threaten any other creature outside of its own turn.

Enticing Bait (Ex): At 6th level, a combat defender can make herself an enticing target to draw out attacks onto herself. As a swift action, she provokes an attack of opportunity from a single target that threatens her. If the target chooses not to attack her or misses on the attack, the target loses the chance to make more attacks of opportunity until the start of the combat defender's next turn so long as they continue to threaten the combat defender.

Lesser Sanctify (Su): A 6th level defender can imbue her weapon with spiritual might. Any weapon she wields is treated as having the Lesser Holy property. She can suppress or resume this ability as a free action. She never takes a penalty because of her alignment for this property.

Combat Maneuver Striker (Ex): At 8th level, a combat defender's strike's become a great annoyance. By taking a –4 penalty to attacks that round, a combat defender can make an additional combat maneuver trick attempt at a –4 penalty.

War Cry (Su): As a standard action, a 9th level combat defender can make a war cry to help lead her allies to victory. The combat defender and all allies that can hear her within 30 feet gain 1d8 temporary hit points per two combat defender levels, which last for 5 minutes. So long as these temporary hit points remain, the ally is also granted a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against [Fear] effects.

Improved Defend (Ex): At 9th level, a combat defender has learned how to better assist herself and her allies in danger. She may now have two active Defend abilities. She gains another active at 18th level, allowing her to have three active.

Tactical Reposition (Ex): At 10th level, a combat defender knows how to move with allies to keep them protected. As an immediate action on an ally's turn, a combat defender can move up to half her speed.

Improved Enticing Bait (Ex): At 12th level, a combat defender can make herself an even more enticing target to draw out attacks onto herself. As a swift action, she may provoke an attack of opportunity from any number of targets that threaten her for her Enticing Bait ability.

Sanctify (Su): A 12th level defender can further imbue her weapon. Any weapon she wields is treated as having the Holy property. This replaces Lesser Sanctify. She can suppress or resume this ability as a free action. She never takes a penalty because of her alignment for this property.

Saint's Fire (Su): At 13th level the combat defender is able to create a burst of divine magic energy around herself as a Standard action. This deals 1d6 points of damage per two combat defender levels to all enemies within 10' of the combat defender. Affected creatures can attempt a Reflex save for half damage (DC 10 + half defender level + defender's Con modifier). This attack deals 150% damage to creatures weak to [Fire] or [Light].

Meltdown (Ex): A 16th level defender can make an all-out last-ditch attack. She may make an attack as a Standard action. If she hits, she automatically threatens a critical hit with this attack, and she gains a +4 bonus on the confirmation roll. In addition, this strike deals surgeblade damage. After using this ability the defender takes non-lethal damage equal to her current hit point total +1.

Unscarred (Ex): An 18th level defender gains bonuses to her abilities as long as she has at least half of her maximum hit points. Whenever she has half HP or more, she gains a +4 morale bonus to Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution.

Saint's Breath (Su): A 20th level defender can tap into the flow of all living things. When she would die from hit point loss or a negative energy effect, with a great gasp, clinging to life, the living energy around her flows into her body and rejuvenates her, preventing the death from occurring and healing her to half her maximum hit points. Once this ability takes effect, it takes one week for the defender to refocus enough to use it again.

Cut Abilities

Surgeblade Focus (Su): At 6th level, a combat defender's energy focus on her surgeblade retains on multiple strikes. As a swift action, she can charge up, applying her surgeblade damage to attacks granted by base attack bonus and attacks of opportunity until the start of her next turn.
