This curved dagger of runed obsidian is suffused with an ominous dark feeling. It's not evil, but rather something else. A sense of absolute, unforgiving finality resonates within the blade.

Yama's Invitation is a +3 occult Charisma-striking dagger that is bane against all creatures with a mortal lifespan. It counts as every alignment as well as cold iron and silver for the purpose of bypassing damage reduction and regeneration. Finally, every time Yama's invitation deals damage, it also permanently lowers the target's maximum hit points by 1. This maximum hit point reduction can be restored by remove curse (followed by a DC 25 caster level check), greater restoration, limited wish or wish.

The true power of Yama's invitation however is in its name. The dagger itself is an invitation by the God of Death, which only those resolved to die dare to take. By plunging the dagger into one's own heart whilst thinking of a dead person, that person can be brought to life in exchange for the petitioner's life. Attacking oneself with the Yama's invitation while being resolved to die to bring back another results in immediate death and causes the dagger to release a call of the reaper effect that restores the desired creature to life at the cost of the wielder's soul, regardless of race, age, time and manner of death, or any other factors. Distance is irrelevant, as long as part of the body of the creature to be resurrected still exists on the material plane.

For the sacrificial ability of the Yama's invitation to take effect, the wielder must not be influenced in any way. Only killing oneself with Yama's invitation of one's own free will will trigger the resurrection of the intended creature, though in these cases the dagger will still claim the wielder's life.

Any creature restored to life through Yama's invitation will immediately die if the sacrifice is resurrected, unless that resurrection is the product of another use of Yama's invitation (or another call of the reaper effect).

The Yama's invitation is a 'transcendental' magic item. Only a few exist in all the planes, and the secrets of their creation have been lost to time. It functions as a minor artifact, cannot easily be destroyed by mortal means and resists dispelling and disjoining like an artifact does. While the magical and life-shaving effects of the weapon disappear within an antimagic field, the sacrificial effect still works normally.
