You push the tip of the knife out just as the bear's claw comes against you. This will hurt it as much as it hurts you.
When you are attacked in melee, you can activate this ability to automatically deal your weapon's damage to the target. Do not add damage from Strength or any other ability score, nor special effects like Power Attack or Sneak Attack, but you deal any properties inherent to the weapon. If the attack against you was a critical hit, the counter damage is also a critical hit.
It does not function if you are out of range to attack the target, such as if they are using a reach weapon.
