Bubble Geysers[edit]

In a similar process as the breakdown that leads to fossil fuels (although very early stages) large amounts of plant-matter can breakdown into glycerin that trap bubbles of air. These bubbles, after years of being trapped underground, can build enough pressure to break through the surface, creating sinkholes and potentially damaging structures. As the pressures build and diminish as they initially rise, creatures are entitled to a DC 25 survival check every round for one minute prior to the pressure release.

Once the pressure is too great for the surface to hold it, it pops through, dealing 1d4 damage to creatures and objects within a 5ft radius (reflex DC 10, negates). In addition, this creates a sinkhole, forcing creatures within the area to make a DC 15 climb check to avoid falling 1d4x10ft into the hole (for rules use quicksand DMG p.89). Objects and structures in the area automatically fall into the hole, swallowing up large or smaller objects and dealing 50 points of damage to structures.

A bubble geyser that has broken through the surface will continue to swell up and release more stored air in the form of bubbles up to 1d10-1 times per day. These bubbles are very strong and filled with light, hot air, that rise quickly. The bubbles have 1 hitpoint, with no hardness, but have a special resistance to bludgeoning damage of five (DR 5/piercing, slashing). Any creature or object that attempts to deal bludgeoning damage that cannot overcome this damage reduction is instead pulled inside the bubble, floating up with it unless they can escape. Bubbles are created at the surface of the geyser and are 1d10 feet radius. They can support up to 15lbs per foot radius, travel skyward at a speed of 100ft per round, and last for 2d6x100minutes minus a minute per pound carried before naturally popping.

Some creatures (particularly small, flightless creatures) will built civilizations on or near bubble geyser fields to manipulate them as a form of travel. With a successful craft (structures) check (DC 20) at the site of the sinkhole, a character can manipulate the opening to always produce the same size bubbles. In addition, using long, thin, tubes characters can also give it a supply of air. Installation requires an additional DC 20 craft (structures), but afterward, merely requires a standard action to create a bubble. Bubbles can be directed by any wind stronger than a light breeze (more than 10mph).

Occasionally, bubble geysers will form underwater. The rules are the same except bubbles travel twice as fast (200ft per round) and always last (naturally) until they get to the surface.
