Chapter 4: Sublime Campaigns[edit]

So much has happened in my long life - many stories, adventures, experiences... Hopefully, some of what I can share here will be of use to you. It was like the time I fought a two-day duel with the Heartlord of Althanar...

- Arminius

Nobody wants your boring stories! Tell us about the time you had a fun time with the Nymphs of Argoll!

- Avara

...

- Arminius

Stop your mindless bickering. This is a serious piece of work.

- Asher

All of the information presented here is not much good without some context to integrate it into your games and your world. This chapter aims to give that context, as well as general range of tools for GMs to use in bringing this content to life.

What is Blade Magic?
Blade magic is the term used by common-folk and barbarians when they see or hear a story pertaining to a creature walking around with a weapon and does something fancy or unbelievable. But, in the worlds of DnD, extraordinary blade techniques happen all the time without the assistance of magic.

This is not to say that all maneuvers are nonmagical. Supernatural maneuvers draw upon the magical energies of the world, in conjunction with the extraordinary skill of a master initiator. It is saying that the term does not do service to initiators, and applies to other fighting styles as well, including most notably, the duskblades and soulknives of the world.

Reshar[edit]

Stuff about Reshar will go here.

The Hidden Arts[edit]

More flavour text goes here.

Sublime Duels[edit]

I have no idea what Eiji Havvy wanted with this section.

100 Sublime Adventures[edit]

Sometimes, as a GM, you can have trouble coming up with adventure hooks. Alternatively, you've been thrown completely off-course by something done by one or more of your players, and you need something new - fast. This chart is meant to assist with that, by presenting one hundred adventure hooks relating to the Sublime Way. These can be used in a Sublime campaign, or just in an ordinary one - whatever you like.

These adventures are primarily designed for characters of 10th level or lower. At 11th level or above, you might want to expand their scope considerably.

# Adventure Idea
1 A legacy weapon of a martial discipline has been stolen, and a retired swordsage has been promising new and previously-unheard-of maneuvers to those who would return it.
2 For political reasons, a legacy weapon belonging to a martial discipline has been handed over to its enemies. This has raised significant splits within the discipline, with everyone needing help getting their way.
3 Every three years, there is a gathering of initiators and a great competition occurs.
4 As number three, but some force is attempting to sabotage the competition.
5 An enemy dojo has decided that your dojo cannot stand. It has called upon powerful Sublime Way martial artists and monsters to make sure that it falls.
6 It seems like there is a mysterious death every month in a nearby dojo. Guards posted at the entrances and magic-blocking teleportation has shown it must be somebody inside the dojo. Who, and why?
7 The master of your dojo has been placed under mind control.
8 After learning everything they could teach you at this dojo, you are seen as an exemplary student. Suddenly, disciples start coming to your door, seeking to be instructed by you. They also talk of a faraway land where many more seek instruction, and your name is reputed.
9 A new discipline has been discovered, drawing the attention of many Sublime Way masters who seek to learn more of it.
10 One of the dojos connected to your own has begun to turn out students that are bringing it into disrepute. This has been going on for some time, and they're starting to blacken you dojo's name.
11 Every year, the legacy weapon connected to a discipline, kept at a nearby temple, is escorted to the place where its parent dojo used to stand. It requires an honour guard, and a capable one, for each year, there is an attempt to steal it on its journey.
12 Your master asks you to take a student of his under your wing for some 'in the field' experience. The student, according to your master, is 'somewhat lacking in capability'. Your master has a known capability for understatement.
13 The magocracy in power is becoming scared of the power of initiators, and has banned the practice of the Sublime Way in the land.
14 The founder of a discipline has died of seemingly natural causes, but they were extremely unexpected. Their disciplines are in mourning, and disorganization is setting in.
15 The founder of a discipline has died unexpectedly. What caused his death?
16 A local warlord with dreams of world conquest seeks instruction in the Sublime Way for himself and his soldiers. He has threatened any dojo or temple that does not comply with his 'request' with destruction.
17 In a distant land, a diabolical invasion has begun. It is rumoured that many Sublime Way masters are drawn to this place, to observe and learn the deadly martial arts of the devils - or to fight against them.
18 Persistent rumours of a martial-arts-using angel have appeared. Furthermore, these rumours are all wildly different in their scope and content, but all point to the same location.
19 The Sword of All Swords has been found, but its location is remote and well-guarded.
20 The legendary swordsage Parasurama is giving away his worldly possessions before his death. If you hurry, you might just get what really matters - his knowledge of the Sublime Way, and his weapons and the mantras for their use.
21 Persistent rumours that the Sublime Way is not a genuine method of fighting continue to circulate, despite attempts to discredit them. It appears that whoever is spreading these rumours may well be a Sublime Way practitioner themselves.
22 A man who claims to be from the future has appeared, demanding the immediate disbandment of the Diamond Mind school, and foretelling terrible doom. Is he a crackpot, a man with an agenda, or is there truth in his words?

Monsters of the Sublime Way[edit]

The Sublime Way, even before Reshar, was widely practiced by different creatures throughout the multiverse. With Reshar's work on unifying and systematising the teaching of the Sublime Way, however, the number of such creatures exploded, mostly spreading among the mortal races. However, this was not the only group of creature who paid attention to what was going on.

This list attempts to present many monsters, suitable for rogue-level campaigns, that use the rules for martial adepts and the Sublime Way.
