Spontaneous Arcane Spellcasting, Bardic Music

Curse Singer[edit]

Sing a song of lamentation / Awake the chorus of desolation / Bathe their soul in desecration / Break their bones in isolation
—Guile Sorrowborne, hellbred curse singer, Songbook of the Curse Singer, Vol. 1

The innate grasp of arcane is rare and beautiful, but can come in terrifying forms. One such form is within the sound of music.

Becoming a Curse Singer[edit]

Entry Requirements
Alignment: Any non-lawful.
Skills: Perform (sing) or perform (oratory) 7 ranks, Knowledge (arcana) 7 ranks.
Spellcasting: Able to cast 1st level arcane spells.
Special: Bardic music class ability, hexblade's curse class ability

A curse singer has learned how to take her arcane power and lace it into her song, twisting and manipulating how it effects those who hear it, for better or for worse. Charisma is important, since it affects how hard your music is to resist. Constitution is second. Then dexterity to avoid being hit. Then whatever else.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the curse singer.

Spells: Beginning at 2nd level, a curse singer gains the ability to cast a small number of arcane spells. The spells a curse singer is able to cast are collectively drawn from the bard spell list and the hexblade spell list. He can cast any spell he knows without preparing it ahead of time, just as a sorcerer can. To learn or cast a spell, a curse singer must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level (Cha 11 for 1st-level spells, Cha 12 for 2nd-level spells, and so forth). The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a curse singer's spell is 10 + the spell level + the curse singer’s Charisma modifier.

Like other spellcasters, a curse singer can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given on Table: Curse Singer Spells Known. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Charisma score. When Table: The Curse Singer indicates that the curse singer gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level (for instance, 1st-level spells for a 2nd-level curse singer), he gains only the bonus spells he would be entitled to based on his Charisma score for that spell level.

The curse singer’s selection of spells is extremely limited. A curse singer begins play knowing no new spells, but gains one or more new spells at certain levels, as indicated on Table: Curse Singer Spells Known.

Curse Singer Music: Curse singer music follows the same rules as bardic music. Curse singer levels stack with bard levels for the purpose of determining how often a character can use curse singer music or bardic music.

Cursed Song(Su): The curse singer can entwine his words, be it song or poetics, with his innate ability to cast a curse upon a foe. Doing so expends one daily use of curse singer music and one daily use of hexblade's curse. All enemies that can hear the curse singer's song (or poetics) are affected as though they were subject to a hexblade's curse. A successful Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 curse singer’s class level + curse singer’s Cha modifier) negates the effect. Any foe that successfully resists the effect cannot be affected again by the same curse singer's hexblade’s curse ability for 24 hours.

Inspire Luck (Su): A curse singer of 2nd level with 8 or more ranks in Perform can use song or poetics to inspire luck in his allies (including himself), bolstering their precision in combat technique. To be affected, an ally must be able to hear the curse singer sing. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the curse singer sing and for 5 rounds thereafter. An affected ally receives a bonus to their weapon's critical threat range, increasing the chance of landing a fatal blow. At level 2, any weapon an ally is holding, the critical threat range is doubled. This ability stacks with the keen spell or the improved critical feat (normally, threat increases don't stack). At 5th level, the threat range is tripled and at 8th the threat range is quadrupled. Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability.

Song of Misfortune(Su): A curse singer of 6th level with 12 or more ranks in Perform can use his song or poetics to encourage clumsiness in his foes.

Inspire Fortune(Su): A curse singer of 7th level with 13 or more ranks in Perform can use his song or poetics

Hexblade's Curse (Su): Curse singer levels stack with hexblade levels for the purpose of determining the Difficulty Class of the hexblade's curse ability.

Greater Hexblade's Curse (Su): When a curse singer attains 3rd level, the penalty on attacks, saves, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls incurred by a target of the hexblade’s curse becomes –4 instead of –2.

Dire Hexblade's Curse (Su): When a curse singer attains 9th level, the penalty on attacks, saves, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls incurred by a target of the hexblade’s curse becomes –6 instead of –4.

Cursed Blade (Sp): A curse singer of 10th level gains the ability to cast cursed blade as a spell-like ability.
