The Dire Winter disciple is an esoteric and magic martial discipline, whose main focus is cold, ice and cruelty. The Dire Winter discipline was started in the bitterness of loss and in the heart of a raging blizzard. The founder of the discipline was forced to flee her home after war came to her town. However it was in the middle of a cold winter and blizzards were frequent, many did not make it to a safe haven, and those who did would soon have to flee again. The discipline's founder soon understood nothing could stand a dire winter, not her people or their attackers. When she finally found haven, she was taught in the art of the sublime way. She spent years perfecting her techniques, learning the way of cold magic and exploring the way of the cold wind. All the while her people suffered under the foot of their oppressor. In the end she knew that when she would next come, the blizzards and dire cold would come with her.

What happened to the founder is lost to history, as her people would be liberated years later. Whether as a direct result of her action, or not, is up for debate. However the discipline she formed, and taught to many disciples carry on. Dire Winter is a discipline that focuses on cold, ice and wind. It uses concepts such as ice accumulation, heat-drain, black ice, snowfall and others to its advantage. It is heavily supernatural in nature, only those with natural cold affinity or able to use cold magic can access it.

Game Mechanics of the Dire Winter

Available To: Any, although the would be initiator must either have the [Cold] subtype or or be able to cast a 1st level [Cold] spell.

Discipline Skill: Intimidate (Cha)

Discipline Weapons: Cross Spear, Lance, Long Pike, Longspear, Scythe, Shortspear and similar weapons. - The Dire Winter discipline teaches it disciple to fight with weapons which bear similarity to icicles. The discipline often relies on attacks which benefit from reach, or only need minimal contacts with your opponents, making spears an ideal fighting weapon for the disciple. 

Saves: DC 10 + Maneuver Level + Intelligence modifier

Discipline Feat: Cold Demeanor 

Tactical Feat: Cruel Frost 

Special: All maneuvers from Dire Winter discipline are supernatural abilities unless specified otherwise.


Maneuvers of the Dire Winter Discipline[edit]

1st-Level Maneuvers

  • Frozen Feet: Counter [Cold] — Prevent yourself from being moved or trip, but become immobilized in the process.
  • Ice Smash: Strike [Cold] — Coat the damaging end of your weapon in a chunk of ice, dealing bludgeoning and cold damage and as if the weapon was larger than it normally is.
  • Icicle Spikes: Stance — You cover yourself in spikes of ice, which deal cold damage.
  • Snowfall Steps: Rush [Cold] — As you move you leave heavy snow in your wake.
  • Winter's Kiss: Stance — You gain scaling resistance to cold, if you have the [Cold] subtype you lose vulnerability to fire.


2nd-Level Maneuvers

  • Deadly Chill: Boost [Cold] — Your next attack deals additional cold damage and leaves a persistent chill.
  • Hoarfrost Armor: Counter [Cold] — You freeze your skin to grant yourself DR 5/adamantine and fire resistance 10 for 1 round.
  • Ice Blade: Strike [Cold] — You make an attack with longer reach that deals half slashing half cold damage, this attack has a higher chance of being a critical hit.
  • Icicle Press: Strike [Cold] — You fill a 5-ft square full of icicles, using them as a caltrop or as a trap based on where you see them.


3rd-Level Maneuvers

  • Brain-Freeze: Counter — You freeze your own brain, making yourself immune to mind-affecting effect for 1 round. Unsurprisingly it also leaves you dazed.
  • Heat-Draining Strike: Strike [Cold] — You drain the heat out of your foe, dealing cold damage and leaving them shaken. You may extinguish heat-based ability from the struck creature.
  • Ice Skating: Rush [Cold] — You create a slippery surface beneath your feet, allowing you to move quickly and cross liquids.
  • Sheer Cold: Stance — Your cold damage is so chilling it bypass cold resistance and halves immunity.


4th-Level Maneuvers

  • Heavy Ice Smash: Strike [Cold] — As per ice smash except that it deals more damage and make smaller foes prone.
  • Localized Snowstorm: Strike [Cold] — You created a miniature snowstorm, which deals damage to foe in an area and leaves difficult terrain.
  • Stealth Ice Spikes: Strike [Cold] — You cover a large area full of effectively invisible ice spikes.
  • Winter Spire: Rush [Cold] — You create a vertically tall wall of ice, which you can use for transportation or terrain denial.


5th-Level Maneuvers

  • Cryostinger Charge: Strike [Cold] — You make a charge attack with extra speed that deals additional cold damage. May freeze opponent solid ona successful hit.
  • Flash-Freeze: Counter [Cold] — Stun a foe you dealt heavy cold damage to, instantly kill an opponent at low hit points.
  • Frigid Refraction: Stance [Air Cold] — You become invisible by refracting away light using air current loaded with ice shards.
  • Frost Breath: Strike [Cold] — You unleash a breath of cold wind, which blows away opponents and gases, deals cold damage and dazes.


6th-Level Maneuvers

  • Arctic Wall: Strike [Cold] — You conjure a wall of ice limited in size, as the spell.
  • Avalanche Advance: Rush — You ride a small avalanche, knocking your foes away from you.
  • Heat Crash: Strike [Cold] — The initiator deals cold damage on a touch, causing the subject to bleed heat at a rapid rate.
  • Never-Melt Ice: Boost [Cold] — This maneuver allows the initiator to create any tools of object she wishes out of blue ice.


7th-Level Maneuvers

  • Freezing Blood Technique: Counter [Cold] — You freeze an incoming attack, negating it. You may also freeze an opponent's weapon or limb solid.
  • Glaciate: Strike [Cold] — Strikes a foe, dealing cold damage and slowly freezing it to death.
  • Ice Honor Guards: Boost [Cold] — You create two ice simulacrums of yourself whose actions are very limited.
  • Storm of the Century: Strike [Cold] — The initiator conjures a dangerous blizzard which is specially hazardous at its epicenter, which does not impair her.


8th-Level Maneuvers

  • Ice Clone: Stance [Cold] — The initiator create a powerful simulacrum of herself with some limitation.
  • Invincible Ice Armor: Boost — The initiator cover herself in a nigh invisible armor of ice.
  • Polar Burst: Strike [Cold] — You unleash a blast of cold air, knocking your foes off their feet.


9th-Level Maneuvers

  • Absolute Zero: Strike [Cold] — The ultimate heat-draining technique, it can disintegrate foes with a single touch.
