|Casting time:||1 Standard Action|
|Range:||Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)|
|Target:||One attended or unattended object made of metal, the object must be able to fit in a 5 ft cube/level.|
|Saving Throw:||Fortitude Partial|
This spell causes a metal item such as an armor or weapon to become searing hot extremely rapidly. This spell may be used to target attended and unattended items, including magic items. In order to use this spell on an attended object, you must make a ranged touch attack against the wielder of the object. Upon initially being cast, heat metal will cause the piece of metal to become very warm, this has no real effect except allow the creature attending the object to drop it (otherwise stop touching it) as a free action.
Once the spell is concentrated on, the metal becomes searing hot. Any creature attending to the item immediately take 1d8 fire damages and drop the object (if it can) and become Staggered for 1 round, a successful Fortitude save allows the creature to keep the item and negate the staggering effect.
If the item cannot be dropped, such as an armor, then a successful Fortitude save negates both the damage and staggering effect. This is repeated each round the creature holds onto the item. If the heated item was a weapon the wielder takes a -4 penalty to attack with the weapon for the duration of the spell and 1 round thereafter, this is [pain] effect. A creature immune to fire damage is immune to all effects of this spell.
This spell may be used to heat a piece of terrain made of metal or a metal creature. This spell is learned or prepared as chill metal, which behaves the same way except it is a [Cold] spell and deals cold damage.
