Lunar Blade[edit]

Lunar Blade
Price: 8,500 gp
Body Slot: Held
Caster Level: 11th
Aura: Moderate conjuration and Illusion (DC 20)
Activation: Use-activated
Weight: 6 lb.
A devout dragon priestess charging her lunar blade under the moonlit skies.

Fashioned from the crystal jade scale of a qilung dragon, lunar blades are rewarded to the most faithful of certain dragon worshipping cults, giving the wielder some of the dragon's ability to control moonlight.

A lunar blade is a large, broad sword with a blade of shimmering green jade, in which a whirlpool of gentle energy seems to coalesce.

The lunar blade counts as a bastard sword for the purpose of wielding it, allowing the wielder to use it two-handed as a martial weapon, or one-handed as an exotic weapon. Its base damage is 1d6 slashing plus a varying amount of pure magical damage that depends on the phases of the moon (see table below). The magical damage bypasses any sort of damage reduction, but any creature with spell dampening counts as having that amount as resistance to the magical damage of the lunar blade. In an antimagic field, the lunar blade's magical damage is suppressed.

The wielder adds one time his Strength bonus to physical damage rolls, and one time his Intelligence bonus to magical damage rolls.

Despite being a rare magical weapon, a lunar blade is not unique and can be enhanced as if it were mundane, though enhancing it costs four times as much as it would to enhance a normal weapon. It however cannot accept a special quality; it may only receive a raw enhancement bonus to attack and damage, up to +5. Each point of raw enhancement bonus adds +1 to the physical and +1 to the magical damage of the weapon.

Table: Lunar Blade Damage
Moon Phase1 Magical Damage Save DC Bonus Charge Recovery
New Moon 1d4 +0 1/hour (1)
Crescent Moon 1d6 +0 1/10 minutes (1d2)
Half Moon 1d8 +1 1/minute (1d4)
Gibbous Moon 1d10 +2 1/round (1d6)
Full Moon 2d6 +3 2/round (2d4)
  1. Only when above ground. Cloud cover will lower the effective phase by one tier to a minimum of 'New Moon'.
Being underground or indoors will always recharge the blade as per 'New Moon'.

Combat Options[edit]

The lunar blade contains up to 10 energy charges, with an additional +3 per point of raw enhancement bonus of the weapon to a maximum of 25 at +5. The lunar blade's charges come back at a rate depending on the phase of the moon (see above table). All save DCs are 10 + (½ BAB or ½ arcane caster level) + Intelligence bonus. The phases of the moon also increase the save DC as per the above table.

The wielder of a lunar blade gains access to the following weapon arts. The charge cost is in parenthesis. You do not passively regain charges during a round in which one of these abilities is used.

Charge: Bearing the blade skyward as a full-round action, you call lunar light in the atmosphere towards you, charging the blade. The amount of charges recovered depends on the phase of the moon (the amount in parentheses in the table above). If the lunar blade has an enhancement bonus of +1 or more, it becomes a standard action, and at +3 it becomes a move action. Any amount of energy charges over the weapon's maximum is lost if not used within 1 round.

Lunar Aurora (1): As a swift action, you erect a friscellating ward of lunar light around you that obscures you for one round, granting a blur effect. At a weapon enhancement of +2, you may choose to create a displacement effect instead for 2 charges per round.

Lunar Slash (5): You make one attack as a part of a standard action. This attack targets every creature and object within a 30-foot line extending from you and does double damage (as per critical hit multiplication). Check the attack roll against the Armor Class of every creature within the line. Every creature hit takes double damage. The range of the line increases by 10 feet for every point of enhancement bonus. Furthermore, if the lunar blade is +2, the damage of the lunar slash is tripled, and at +4 it is quadrupled. This attack can neither be a critical hit or a critical miss.

Lunar Shield (1): Holding the sword at the cross in front of you as a standard action, you call upon the lunar energy within to guard you from attacks. As a swift action, you gain a shield bonus to Armor Class equal to 2 plus the lunar blade's enhancement bonus for one round. The lunar blade does not passively regain charges while this ability is active. You may deactivate the shield at any time as a free action. Activation becomes a move action at +1 and a swift action at +3.

Lunar Barrier (3): At an enhancement bonus of +2 or higher, you may project the Lunar Shield out in a 10-foot radius, granting every ally in the area its bonus as long as the ability remains active. Activation as per Lunar Shield.

Moonfall (25): With a powerful thrust into the sky, you call down meteors of lunar light that scald the area with powerful magic damage. As a full-round action you duplicate the effect of meteoric mortar. Instead of fire damage, the extra damage stems from pure magical energy and is typeless. Your effective caster level for this ability is equal to your caster level or base attack bonus, whichever is higher.

Lunar Severance (0): At an enhancement bonus of +3 or higher, you may activate a mode called lunar severance. In this mode, the green luster of lunar blade becomes a conflagrant ghostly flame with constantly shifting colours that constantly draws inward upon the blade. In this state, it becomes a brilliant energy weapon that deals purely magical damage and gains the properties of aetherion, dealing 1 point of Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma damage on every successful hit that does at least one point of magical damage. While lunar severance is active, the lunar blade loses one energy charge at the start of every turn, but you also gain access to new powerful abilities. Lunar severance will continue until all of the lunar blade's charges are expelled, either from duration or through usage of weapon arts. The lunar blade cannot be charged passively or with the Charge weapon art while in severance mode. You can only activate Lunar Severance when the lunar blade has full charge.

Aether Slash (3): Usable only in severance mode, this is the severance variant of the Lunar Slash which passes through any physical barriers (ignoring line of effect) and deals 1d6 points of Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma drain on a successful hit (Will half).
Homing Aether (3): Usable only in severance mode, by swiping the sword in a vertical arc overhead as a standard action, you summon a number of floating orbs of disruptive energy above you equal to the lunar blade's enhancement bonus (3 to 5). These energy orbs function like aetherion orbs and move with you. An orb will automatically discharge as a ray attack towards any enemy creature approaching within 15 feet, either due to your movement or that of the enemy. Any one enemy can only be targeted by one orb per round. Multiple usages of this weapon art don't stack in terms of number of orbs.
Aethernova (All): Usable only in severance mode, this ability expends all remaining charges within the lunar blade at once and releases them in a powerful aethernova centered upon you (as per the spell), with an effective caster level equal to the number of charges that were left in the lunar blade. This ability has a 1-round activation time and ends severance mode upon completion.
