The naiad; a hunter and muse. A fey of the wild and water. 3 1 Good Poor Good Good Other Other

Naiad Paragon[edit]

In essence, the naiad paragon is a hunter and a muse. She works with others and serves as support. She gains mobility and supremacy in her home environs. Focusing on her racial prowess is paramount for becoming an exemplar of her kind. When classing out of her paragon class, naiads tend toward either combat- or skill-focused classes and roles.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the naiad paragon.

Proficiency & Progression: A naiad paragon gains proficiency with martial weapons, with light armor and with shields. A level in naiad paragon counts as a level in fighter for the purposes of qualifying for feats as well as an initiator level for classes which grant maneuvers.

Additionally, her clothing grants her an armor bonus of 1. This benefit doesn't stack with other armor bonuses nor does her clothing count as armor for the purposes of restrictions.

Specialization: At 1st level, a naiad paragon focuses her training. Choose one of the following:

Her Own Hands (Ex): She gains Improved Unarmed Strike. She may make a two-handed attack as an unarmed attack if both her hands are free. She gains a +2 racial bonus on all Craft skill checks.

Simple & Effective (Ex): She treats simple weapons as one size larger for the purposes of dealing damage with them. Additionally, when using a simple weapon, she may choose to deal half damage with it (reducing the DC of any ability associated with the attack by 4) and gain a +4 circumstance bonus on her attack roll.

Steeled & Tempered (Ex): She gains proficiency with medium and heavy armor. She doesn't lose her Fey of the Water/Fey of the Woods bonus when wearing heavier armors (though other encumbrances still apply). She only applies half of her armor's Armor Check Penalty to her Swim skill checks.

Loyal Animal Friend (Ex): She may start the game with a loyal animal friend chosen from the following lists:

SRD Starting Loyal Animal Friends: Baboon, Badger, Bat, Cat, Dog, Donkey, Eagle, Hawk, Lizard, Monkey, Owl, Pony (War Pony), Porpoise, Rat (Dire Rat) Raven, Toad, Weasel, Viper (Small), Viper (Tiny).
Homebrew Starting Loyal Animal Friends: Bobcat, Chicken, Chickfowl (Chickfowl of the Sea), Compsognathus, Duck, Frog (Goliath Frog, Poison Dart Frog), Mouse, Rabbit, Red Fox, Squirrel (Flying Squirrel), Tortoise, Tree Ocelot.

A naiad's loyal animal friend is an animal who's CR is at most a total of 1/2 her ECL. This animal regards her with a friendly attitude. She may give commands (vocal or gestural) and handle her loyal animal friend as a free action. She may push her loyal animal friend as a move action (treating the skill as usable untrained if she has no ranks). She gains a +4 circumstance bonus on Handle Animal skill checks regarding her loyal animal friend. A loyal animal friend may learn 1 extra trick per her ECL. She may only have a single loyal animal friend at a time. Raising a loyal animal friend from death requires only 1/10th the material cost for spells and never results in level loss.

She may dismiss a loyal animal friend in a 1 hour ritual. Such an animal loses any extra tricks known for being a loyal animal friend. She may bond with an eligible friendly animal and gain it as a new loyal animal friend with a different 1 hour ritual.

Mighty Hunter (Ex): When wielding a composite bow, she may use her Dexterity in place of the Strength requirement and increased damage for the weapon's strength rating. She may also treat the bow as 1 point of strength rating higher if her own ability exceeds that of the bow.

Skill's Muse (Ex): At 1st level, a naiad knows how to serve as inspiration for others when she's at her best. A naiad paragon may grant a +4 bonus to an adjacent ally when using an Aid Another action for skill checks in which she has maximum ranks as well as on ability checks for two ability scores of her choice. She may aid another on such checks as an immediate action for checks that take a standard action or less.

At 2nd level, she also knows how to interfere with such skills and may choose to provide a –4 penalty instead. If the target is unwilling, she must make a touch attack which does not provoke an attack of opportunity. She may now provide either a +2 bonus or –2 penalty on any skill she has at least 1 rank in and on any ability check as an immediate action.

Wide Eyed (Ex): At 1st level, a naiad has keenly trained her eyes. A naiad paragon gains darkvision out to 60 feet. If she focuses her sight as a full-round action to make a Spot check, she is treated as having "taken 20". The DCs of epic Spot checks are reduced by half when she "takes 20".

At 3rd naiad paragon level, her darkvision extends out to 120 feet.

Fey Finesse (Ex): A 1st level naiad paragon may apply her Dexterity modifier in place of her Strength modifier for attack rolls and damage for attacks as well as for combat tricks she is proficient with. This ability counts as Weapon Finesse for the purpose of meeting prerequisites.

Ability Boost: A naiad's natural prowess grows with her. At 2nd level, she gains a +2 racial bonus to one of her 3 lowest ability scores.

At 4th level, she gains another +2 racial bonus which may be allocated to the ability score of her choice.

Fey of the Water/Fey of the Woods (Ex): A naiad paragon takes to the hunt both on land in the wild and in the depths of the water. At 2nd level, she gains a +10 foot bonus to her base land speed and swim speed, so long as she is only carrying at most a light load and wearing light armor. Additionally, when she would gain this bonus, she no longer takes a penalty to attacks made underwater, her ranged attacks count as siege attacks for the purpose of wind effects and she bypasses 20% concealment gained from natural plants and undergrowth. The DC to track her trail increases by 1 per her ECL.

At 4th level, her speed bonus increases to +20 feet. She may now even retain her +10 foot bonuses even when encumbered or wearing heavier armors.

Obsession (Su): As a naiad grows in power, so too do her obsessive traits. At 3rd naiad paragon level, she may touch a willing creature as a standard action to imbue it with some of her power and draw power from the link between them. The two creatures are bonded with a telepathic link that allows silent communication so long as they remain on the same plane. Additionally, they share each other's known languages so long as the link is maintained. The linked creature also gains the ability to breathe underwater as a supernatural ability. If the link is broken (either by the naiad paragon dismissing it as a standard action or by the death of the linked creature), she becomes dazed for 1 round.

A naiad paragon suffers a –1 morale penalty to skills, ability checks, ability DCs and attacks if her obsession is out of her sight or touch for longer than 1 minute. This penalty increases to –2 after 24 hours (which is usually enough for a naiad paragon to break her obsession).

She may only have a single focus of obsession at a time. Previous focuses of obsession must be dismissed before she can form a new one.

Touch of Drowning (Su): A naiad paragon knows how to take advantage of land-bound foes out of their element. At 3rd naiad paragon level, as a standard action or an attack action as part of a full attack, a naiad paragon may make a touch attack against a target holding its breath. If she succeeds, the number of rounds the creature has remaining while holding its breath before it suffocates is reduced by half.

Hydrogyne (Su): A naiad paragon is a creature of water. At 4th naiad paragon level, she gains fire hindrance 50% and she (and any gear she wears or carries) cannot catch on fire. Additionally, whenever she's submerged in clean water, she gains fast healing 1.

Naiad Paragon Lore[edit]

Make Knowledge (Nature) checks to gain information on naiad paragons. When a character makes a successful skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (Nature)
DC Result
10 A naiad paragon is a deft huntress of the forest and of the water. They often serve as muses for their companions. Many are confused for their more exotic and reclusive relatives, the nymphs.
15 A naiad paragon can grant breath under water or take it away. Their keen vision and supernatural prowess makes them able to attack at range when other creatures would be hindered. Their speed makes them able to keep their distance if necessary.
