Author's Note:
Because the study of mystical energies (esoterism) has been a well-established (if inconclusive and methodologically scattered) field in one form or another for at least three millennium, I feel that it is necessary to convey that this primer is NOT designed as a true-to-form analysis of reality, perceived or otherwise, concerning mystical energies on planet earth (Earth Prime). To reiterate: The "findings" here are not an attempt at establishing "real-life" pseudo-science...we are aware these results are non-testable. This modeling is an early attempt at using (what I've learned is called) "Systems Inquiriy" to produce theoretical models; in this case, the models are structured within fictional universes in which "magic" and "energy manipulation systems" are existent and irrefutable laws of nature. This primer attempts to aid in the understanding and analysis of these widely disparate systems (and their convoluted structures) within their respective (fictional) universes.

Introduction to Energy Manipulation Research[edit]

Throughout the history of the multi-verses, the spiral-races have always been racing to the unknown. When they find it, they often react with fear. But just as mankind gave darkness a name, and conquered it, so too have all the spiral-races continued to conquer their fears, always replacing them with understanding.

Some things, of course, are more difficult to comprehend than others. But we have learned that just because we do not understand something does not mean it cannot be understood—and indeed, it has been the life-long pursuit of many, including myself, to understand what lies beyond…


Personal Energy Manipulation is a complex field of study, involving multiple branches of scientific thought. Both technical, categorical, and social elements come to play. By definition, a personal energy manipulation is an action taken by a sentient being utilizing secondary energy that results in a meta-physical impact on the environment. The purpose of this primer is to expand on the understanding of this definition, fundamental technical and categorical concepts of energy manipulation, and social implications. We want to emphasize that much of this research is still ongoing: as such, this primer is meant to leave room for growth and re-exploration. The multi-verse is every-expanding; one must have the ability to cut through the noise just as easily as one adds to it.

This primer is comprehensive, and is suitable for individuals of any level interested in understanding energy systems.


Magic In Context: The Role of Culture[edit]

The perception of energy manipulation varies drastically across the multi-verses. In some worlds, energy systems are seen as impossibilities, in others, the utilization of personal energy manipulation is seen as natural as breathing. The classifications and understanding of these systems is directly related to the relative energy level of the closed-system in which the energy is being used. We use the primary planetary body of a civilization's evolution as the base point where this is determined. A planet that has high levels of inherent sub-particle energy will have very different perspectives and structures surrounding energy manipulation than a planet with limited sub-particle energy. This doesn't just extend to overall energy levels. The shape the energy takes, as we'll discuss in chapter two, plays a influential role in determining its role in societies.


In words with high sub-particle energy, energy manipulation often takes the form of a science, where different systems and structures of energy manipulation are cataloged and still follow the basic laws of physics within that multiverse.
(In high-level universes, magic serves as an extension of scientific understanding and energy movement. It draws on basic elements of chemistry and physics. Even so, it still has deep-rooted cultural norms. The circumstances that allow for various users to utilize energy is also studied from a biological and evolutionary standpoint. But even magic cannot be understood fully. In low energy tier universes, the study of "magic" is similar; in fact, due to the confusion of both universes using the same word to describe similar, but highly distinct phenomenon, we generally use differentiating terminology. While the same elements are studied, personal or being based energy manipulation, a general definition of high-tier system definition of magic, is not possible. Magic instead refers to many unknown phenomenon. It's associated with myth, miracle, religion, and the like, and has its own basis in culture and anthropological/species studies.) On C0+- The core matter of this is this sentence: a phenomenon “explainable by the ‘natural laws of the world’”. On most C0+- worlds, not only are magical systems as we understand it nonexistent, but they are a literal impossibility according to the laws of that universe. Therefore while it is easy for us to broach concept that magic and science are linked entities, it is not only difficult, but impossible for C0’s to do so because magic as a whole does not exist.


In worlds with Low sub-particle energy 'Magic', or energy manipulation, is associated with physical impossibilities such as pulling something from nothing. Many of these phenomenon are associated with civilizations religious mythos, with the creation mythos being one of the most striking examples of this construct. Magic Refers to the unknown and unexplainable, and is not seen as a branch of scientific study. In both high and low inherent energy worlds, magic is associated with a wide variety of actions; however, because of the physical limitations, nearing impossibility, of personal energy manipulation, science in these worlds sees magic as an element related to ignorance and non-understanding. worlds, magic is impossible. Therefore, any and all occurrences that are “magical” in nature are explained by an occurrence of “sufficiently advanced technology.” In addition the continual advancement of science and scientific understanding creates a system in which something that “seemed like magic” (in this context, meaning “impossible, unreal”) turns out to be a phenomenon “explainable by the ‘natural laws of the world’”. This in turn enforces the non-existent and unclassifiable nature of magic.

Manipulation, Magic, Tool, or Science? (An Application of Clarke's Third Law)[edit]

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” "Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology."

Science is the study and classification of the universe that we can observe (or “the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.”) Science on most worlds is divided into four branches (see “branches of observation”). On C2 worlds the study of Magic is merely another one of these branches, albeit highly specialized.

Part Two: Microanalysis: Component-Based examination of Personal Energy Manipulations[edit]

Using technical principles to examine personal energy manipulations in its entirety, often to discover the underlying technical elements underneath.

Manipulation Outline[edit]

The manipulation outline is used as a cursory examination of a personal energy manipulation. It helps breakdown and isolate specific elements of manipulations that can be used to aid in various categorization methods. We'll discuss the details of categorization in chapter two. The outline is based around the start-finish principle of manipulation, a linear perspective, that states that for any given manipulation to be completed there must be an identifiable start and end point.

There are primary chronological phases of a manipulation: Formation (I), Construction (II), and Transference (III). Within each are the functional sequences: Primary, Secondary, and Flux.

Agency's Effect on Energy Flow[edit]

In order to differentiate between the basic types of "energy" we see even in fantasy settings, we must account for these primary variables:

There are two basic types of Energy Manipulations that we study: independent and dependent.
author's note: Does independent include agency and steps, or simply steps? One could have full agency to cast spells, and be responsible for almost none of the hard-work (see, technology).

In our sector, Independent Manipulations are the more common of the two. A manipulation is classified as when the individual, known as the Independent Manipulator controls most if not all elements involving the manipulation; in other words, acts with full agency, assuming they are physically and mentally cable.

A manipulation is classified as Dependent when the individual has ---

dependent manipulation', in an individualistic two or more entities, known as Dependent Manipulators share the steps involving the manipulation. These individuals are dependent on each other to complete the manipulation. A dependent manipulation is similar to a team based activity, such as playing catch, or playing a team sport.
Dependent manipulation has additional terminology, such as Proxy Manipulators (on others behalf), Collective (acts with other beings), based on traditional concepts of agency.


In an Independent Manipulation, all steps are performed by the same individual. In a dependent manipulation (see below), any number of individuals share these steps, in any variety of manner.
Some common terminlogy used to refer to task-specific dependent manipulator specialists, known as Agents, include:

Sources[edit]

Source energy refers to the general location or style of energy that is being drawn. It does not tell us what the manipulation or manipulator can accomplish, simply where and how the energy is flowing. Energy sources rarely exist in one pure or singular state, similar to how various economic systems combine.

Entity[edit]

Entity based systems draw energy from an external entity. (loan/channel)
Entity’s energy-->lifeform-->affect
Describes sources of energy controlled or created by an entity or entities that is then "lent" as an activating agent; may include "interest" as a fee. Primary Entity based system may include faith (Divine, Warlock) based magic.

Pool[edit]

Pool systems draw energy from an external source that is non-entity based. (loan/channel)
energy-->lifeform-->affect
Describes sources of collective energy. These sources are often intertwined with life force, but often have an secondary element included. Primary Mana-Pool systems include Arcane Prime.

"Inner"[edit]

Draws energy from inner reserves. Often combined with other sources.
Describes sources of energy contained primarily within the bodies of entities. This deals directly with the life-force.

Planar[edit]

Planar system draws energy from an alternate plane and takes that energy to another plane.

Describes energy sources that come directly from another plane. Many energy sources include planar as a secondary.
Energy Source Mixing
No energy source exists as a direct representation of the primary sources. Arcane magic, for instance, relies primarily on a Mana-Pool. However, the Mana-Pool itself is accessed by utilizing an certain amount of extant power inside of one's body. The mana-pool itself is generated from life-energy, which is generated from collective entities, and is in fact "returned" at a certain amount of time. This mana-pool is not visible to the human eye, and it has been suggested that while the mana-pool does occupy our worlds, what we're viewing is the mana-pool in it's natural state; alternate planes. Energy Sources must be regarded simply as tools...imperfect analogies that help represent the primary elements involved in a system. Remember, the point of this primer is classification.

Resultant Force[edit]

Resultant force is the actual result of a manipulation of energy. Just as the methodologies of personal energy system vary, so too can their results. We the following terms are used by energy manipulation researchers to refer to the resultant force type of various manipulations:

Abjuration
Manipulations that are generally defensive in nature; to protect, block, or dispel. Magic circles are an example of abjuration. Specialists in abjuration are called "abjurers".

Animation*
Animation is sometimes nested under Conjuration (Creation).

Conjuration
Manipulations that deals with bringing and sending energy to and from planes. Conjuration has five major sub-classes, all of which are closely related: Calling, which involves the bringing of entities (generally within the confines of Magic Circles, Containment field) with a binding usage agreement, Creation, which summons energy from other planes to create objects and non-living entities, Teleportation, which involves the direct movement of entities or objects across planes, Summoning, which involves the summoning of entities who return to their original plane after a limited usage agreement is fulfilled, and Healing, which uses energy to heal or bring individuals from the dead. Specialists in conjuration are called "conjurers."

Divination (Thaumaturgy)
Divination is the use of energy for specific information gathering techniques. Examples of divination include detecting secret doors, discerning lies, location, communicating to creatures or other planes, seeing invisibility, and so on. Divination has many similar elements to the Dresdenverse's Thaumaturgy. Scrying is a specific use of energy to create an device that can view, see, hear, or somehow convey information.

Enchantment
Enchantment refers to manipulation of the mind. In the Dresdenverse, any manipulation of the mind is against the Laws of Magic; furthermore, usage may cause one to go insane. This is not always the case. On one of the primary forms enchantment takes is Charm. Charm is the ability to manipulate energy to subtly persuade or trick an being into believing that what you say is true, accurate, and act generally benevolently and favorably towards you. Charms are usually temporary, and are not known for permanent affects or mental damage, though same may last longer than others. The Jedi Mind trick is an example of an charm. Charms are the less dangerous of the two main branches of enchantment.

The second branch is Compulsion, the ability to manipulate energy to overtly influence the mind of those around you. Although compulsion is generally frowned upon in all methods of magic, there are a few notable cases of benevolent or neutral compulsion. Examples include bolstering the courage of allies around you, hypnotism as entertainment, or causing sleep. Most compulsion is negatively attuned, however, and often has the potential to cause permanent and lasting damage. Compulsion directly affects the brain itself. Spells completely dominating the wills of others around you, enthralling them (like Mind flayers do), and causing fear or insanity. Erasing memory is generally frowned upon as well, as it can have the same detrimental and highly devestating affects. Though charm could technically be acceptable according to the Rules of Magic in the Dresdenverse, any use of compulsion class spell would certainly be a violation.

Elemental
Manipulation of the classic elements via a connection with the elements. This is different than conjuration primarily due to what is being manipulated. Often, conjuration elements are not representations of the elements themselves, but constructs of energy. Elemental manipulation deals with energies that are fundamentally just those elements. Most elemental manipulators, called elemantlists, are not able to conjure anything non-element based.

Evocation
Evocation class spells are most commonly known in the Arcane manipulate energy or tap into some source of power to produce a desired affect.

Illusion
Figment, glamer, pattern, phantasm, shadow. Has no ill affect on the mind.

Necromancy
Manipulation of energy surrounding both life AND death, though it is normally associated with death. Necromancy is also commonly associated with evil and darkness. This is due primarily to the fact that Necromancy (and "Necromancers") focus on taking away life energy, rather than simply manipulation or creating life energy; furthermore, Necromancers that manipulate life and death energy normally do so in a way that is considered "unwholesome" by corrupting an individuals life energy as well as taking away their free-will. In short, Necromancers focus on animating or controlling the dead (in a way that is normally "damaging" to the dead), as opposed to healing or giving life.
In the Dresdenverse, Necromancy is forbidden to be used on humans.

Time
There are a few manipulations which can alter time-- to slow down, reverse, stop, or speed up time. Creating alternate timelines, looking into the future, time force fields (Zilean, league of legends) and time-travel are all possible abilities that fit under the Time class of resultant force. Time as a healing agent (Zilean, Orihime) is another unique usage.

Transmutation
Transmutation manipulation can change the property of creature, thing, or condition. While not as flashy as evocation class, transmutation requires a HUGE amount of energy. Transmutation, due to it's definition, is a very broad class of manipulation. Enhancing physical qualities (eyesight, charisma, jumping ability, durability, levitation, flight) are the staple of transmutation spells. These manipulations are sometimes called "buffs", as it "buffs" or "amps" up the persons during the manipulation.

    Arcane Prime[edit]

    Arcane Prime is one of the most well-known types of magic.

    History of Arcane Prime Manipulation in "Galad" Sector


    Arcane (Prime) manipulation is one of the oldest and most well known in our Universe with only "Primal" Magic predating it. Arcane manipulation is most commonly associated with Wizards. Other users of Arcane Prime manipulation include Witches, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Magicians.

    Teaching Methods


    Arcane Prime teaching methods have become the norm of most magical training. On high magically influenced worlds, like Sentia and DFW, or at least where magic is more well known with many more options for training and "sensing" , Magic is equivalent to many college options, learning many of the same skills, and still remaining active in the field.

    Learning spells through magical tomes, books, or other arcane tomes is the standard of Arcane magic, along with organized schools and other similar programs*. However, not all classified "Arcane" magic is learned this way**, but most of it is, even including Necromancy, Elemental Magics, and summoning, which are usually taught through from innate student knowledge, learning through repetition, memory, practice, and experimentation, as these end up being classes similar to Chemistry with lots of lab days, to learn these "spells". or just from practice and repetion (in some schools of magic) through "spells" has become the norm of most magical training, as has arcane magic of any sort, in any branch.

    Merlin the Mage (Earth Prime) There are some thoughts that Merlin may have been an Jewish Kabbalist, using advanced forms of other EMS that would later lead him too more "modern" or commonly accepted practices, methodologies, and occurrences of Arcane practice.


    Merlin the Mage (Galad) In the Galadian universe, there is a strong possibility that Merlin may have been an ancient, related or desendent from ancients, an aspect or "will-aspect" of an ancients thoughts, or (commonly accepted) "blessed" ("touched" in some translations") by the Ancients. Merlin is widely considered to be one of the most powerful wizards of all time, and it is quite possible that he is still alive today....albeit, in a different forms.

    Manipulators


    Arcane Magic is one of the most well known EMS. It is one of the most commonly used on high rated EMS planets. Between these worlds there is striking similarities not only between learning methods, but also between the practitioners themselves. Perhaps due to the nature of Arcane Magic, this is a necessity.

    Variants[edit]

    The worlds of the Dresden Files, Harry Potter, LOTR, Dungeons and Dragons, Game of Thrones, Dark Souls, or the Night Angel Trilogy all employ some variation of Arcane manipulation.

    Although these worlds employ different methods of categorization, classification, wording, and so on, they are share basic Arcane manipulation principles. They also employ similar teaching methodologies of intense teacher-mentor and collegiate style learning. Elemental "Arcana" from Dark Souls draws on the actual esscence of life itself rather than an conjuration or evocation of magical power in the form of fire. As you will read, Arcana is one of the more complicated in terms of categories due to the complications and concerns with the colloquially term of "magic" and "magics" importance across the various universes as an independent entity from other EMS forms.

    Psionic Prime[edit]

    Psionics is considered to be a more "intuitive" branch of manipulation than Arcane Prime, relying on naturally-developed abilities. Universe or planetary energy levels (see Mass Elevation) often produces high-psionic levels in the populace.

    Low complexity classification are reserved for impulses and senses that, although powerful, are mechanically simple. On C-2 planets are common; these groups have low levels of capacity for any kind of EM, as well as generally low awareness.

    Dealing with an influx of new, unknown, and often dangerous manipulations is a complex and challenging task for a society; even more so for the adminstrators who must directly deal with the daily reprucussions.

    Part Five: Theories of Energy Manipulation[edit]

    A principle may be defined as "a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning." Listed below are many of the core principles of energy manipulation.

    Start-Finish Prinicple

    While included in this theories section, the concept of start-finish is the principle on which all current energy manipulation is based aroudn. Often just known as 'the principle'

    Theory of Infinite Systems


    Energy Pool Theory A large number of EM systes draw on an external energy source, often called a mana-pool. This could be an technological source of energy (Animorphs), mystic (Arcane), or faith (Divine). Could also be another dimension, alien, etc. The Theory of Infinite system states that there are an infinite amount of unique energy systems that exist throughout the universe.


    Theory of Elevation Energy increase on a massive scale, generally resulting in the ability to manipulate objects of another plane of existence OR affecting an complexity factor above


    Theory of Elevation Shift Elevation shift is the theory that on planets who are either highly charged with and/or highly aware of energy manipulation causes most, if not all lifeforms to develop increased physical and mental attributes, above and beyond what one might normally expect. The planet itself can be responsible. The food, atmosphere, or environmental factors could contribute; potentially causing the changes to be permanent.


    Sentientologic Perspective Scope The Law of Perspective Scope states that EM system classification is relevant insofar as the knowledge of the classifiers. In one common example: most class C-1 beings view animals as C-0. While this may or may not be entirely correct, it is also known that on C-2 planets animals are C-1, and possibly even higher (Theory of or instance, just as we view most animals to be C-0 level, higher level beings might considered humans to be C-0; therefore, even if we were using the same classification system, the perspective scope would still still drop the Complexity. Perspective scope is necessary because

    In addition, as new research appears concerning the meta-physical properties of conjuration (high level math and physics to explain other dimensions) related to those dimensions and relativity, as well as electromagnetic fields, we may continue redefining our understanding of EM systems.


    Loss of Control Rule(Complexity) Loss of control in higher complexity can cause devastating results.


    Theory of Origin to Origin Interaction The Law of Origin to Origin interaction states that interactions between various inputs, outputs, and source can have variety of different affects in their interaction. Troll Curse has been noted to have many similarities with high levels of radiation poising: however, in general the input, which is mystical, creates a mystical output. However, there are a few possibilities in this scenario:

C)NOn-Magical disease process (etc) causes radiation D) non-magical disease or process that causes "magical" radiation Although there are no hard and fast rules, it must be pointed out that in each of these situations, there may be difficulty solving the problem with either magic or technological devices.     Other Readings[edit]

    Magic as a Lifeform Some theorize that certain magic sources could be considered a type of life-form re-perptuating and producing itself as it draws energy from its users. There are some entities that have done this in more subtle and less harmful ways (Mistborn, Alien), or in destructive ways...such as demons. However, particularly in cases of "arcane-streams", this becomes an disputed topic. If Magic is considered a life-form, are viruses also considered life-forms? Are some arcane-streams remnants of DNA of older beings, such as Ancient Ones? But is the same then true for viruses? Is it alive? Is it dead? Does it's odd behaviour show that it is not simply following the rules of chemistry and physics? But can we ourselves say that we are not just following these rules? The debate is continuing on, with small victories on either side. But it is not possible to make a blanket statement on all magic sources, or even one category. Case-by-case examination is the closest we can get.


    Magic in Non-Sentientological Terms Where does the line end? What is "personal energy manipulation." Is any of it personal? Is it conscious?

    The creation-the "conceptualizing" of magic into the universe, has always been a topic for discussion in all magic circles. Because Magic has so many different variations, what people would have known as "magic" could have differed greatly between, worlds, planets, continents, or even similar civilzations. What was magic on one planet could have been science on another (and vice versa), or could have been another "great mystery" (until magic, according to them, was "created" thousands of years later). Because of these differences, it is very hard to determine the precise dates that magic developed (or was brought, in many theories) into our universe.
    Magical research was stalled for a long time due to the dilemma of the chronological difference between "discovery" versus "creation", and the differences of each of these between planents, countries, towns, villages, and so on (as mentioned before). Although modern magical users realize the huge difference between a single planet's discovery versus magic's "creation", their ancestors did not; On planet A, Hero killed Beast and magic was created from power seeping out of Magical Weapon, was a very typical example of this confusion of ancient people. Although it seems that these examples should be discarded as useless, the difficulty was that some of them (and some of them still; the process is never ending) had grains of truth hidden in them, or secondary meanings and other "decipherable" hidden by magical users, unlock able only by magical users to find, thousands or even million of years later.

    Influence of the Ancients[edit]

    Despite the true creation of magic being such an elusive topic, the "discovery" of magic on almost every planet in existence has been traced back to one source: The Ancients. This race of highly advanced, "god-like" beings are so developed that even the many modern Deities across the universe are simply DESCENDANTS of these beings. Whether the Ancients were catalyst or creator, they have most defintely had an influence of magical function in the universe.

    Whether magic was conceived at the formation of our universe, or perhaps in one before, after, or in a different dimension, the fact remains: the god-like entities known as the The Ancients have introduced magic to almost every world either directly or indirectly (as is the case with Earth).
