A shallow layer of molten rock, about 2ft deep, oozes up from the ground, applying the effects of lava to creatures who pass through the affected square. This includes its current occupant, who must make a reflex save to move to the nearest available square, or immediately take 2d6 damage from lava exposure. Future creatures do not receive any saving throw. Moreover, for the spell's duration, the affected area is treated as difficult terrain, and requires 2 squares of movement to enter.

At the end of the duration, the rock seeps back into the earth/floor. In the meantime, this spell does affect objects, including terrain, and may burn away vegetation or damage wood structures. In particular, small, low-lying objects may be completely submerged, and hence take greatly enhanced damage.

The effects may be enhanced by being cast in a higher-level slot.

By increasing the spell level by one, you may increase the area to "1 5ft square per 2 levels".

By increasing the spell level by two, you may increase the duration to "instantaneous", in which case the lava does not dissipate but must instead cool naturally. Once cooled, it leaves behind an appropriate quantity of mundane igneous stone, completely encasing objects which were not removed.
