Steam Engine[edit]

In steampunk societies, the steam engine is the go-to method of power generation in the brave new world. They are simple; a supply of water which is heated through pipes and sent into a turbine, where the steam is released (or sometimes cooled down and re-used). It can be achieved through mundane means, but in magical societies magitech versions have appeared.

Basic steam engines have about 10 horsepower behind them and are difficult to move due to their size, though smaller portable engines about the size of an anvil which give off 2 horsepower. Steam engines tend to be very heavy regardless, at 300 lbs and 30 lbs respectively. Steam engines consume both a supply of water and a source of heat, typically coal, which may add additional weight when fully stocked. Typically 1 lb of coal is enough to last 1 hour.

Magical steam engines are possible, using a combination of heat metal and create water. The lack of a need for a water take halves the weight, but the price tends to increase and it shuts down in an antimagic field.

Steam engines from more advanced societies may have a higher horsepower rate, easily up to 10,000 horsepower and greater.

Craft Technology DC 25; Price 800 gp (large mundane), 400 gp (small mundane), 1600 gp (large magical), and 800 gp (small magical). The magic version requires Craft Wondrous Item, CL 5th, create water, and heat metal in addition to the other requirements.
