Wow, poo-pooing on what was a Community Favorite. Okay, so, first off, free castle? No material or XP cost? So.... you can just have an armada of flying castles given a week? Pffffttt... okay. Well, they can't be commandeered, you don't even have to be in the castle to command it. It happens to be Instantaneous duration, so... uh, nonmagical flying castle I guess. Not something I'd recommend. EDIT: After thinking about it a bit more, can you imagine leveling up to level 17 and you get an extra d6 of Sneak Attack and some skill points, no BAB bonus, no boost to saves because you're a rogue and that's what you get and then you look over and your teammate has a flock of flying castles (funny example with the rogue I know, but first class I thought of). You're just not playing the same game with everyone. There is at least one class dedicated to "you get an airship" and having someone just get it a flying castle for free with armaments is insulting. I guess they're immune to tornados and hurricanes and stuff too or whatever since they can't be brought down because why not. Unless the DM is using this for a villain or something, maybe it works. Otherwise no.

One of the few permanent buildings in D&D, and it's a SKY CASTLE? Love it!

Who doesn't want to have a floating castle in the sky? That is like uber status points in the big game of who's cooler then who in the royal courts.

A Second Look[edit]

So I've taken a second look at this recently and I have a few thoughts and concerns. As a note, I'll happily change my rating assuming these are met.

1. Gan has a point that there are problems with the components, but I'd actually suggest an expensive focus. Uncertain about the cost, but I mean... It's a castle, so maybe start looking at that as a lower limit and probably go a bit higher.
2. Since we've got an expensive focus, let's make it stay inside the castle. If removed, the castle parks, and whoever controls the focus is the castle's master. Probably put in something for a full control and an immediate control or something.
3. The duration should probably be Instantaneous and Permanent (see text). If it makes a castle, that's fine just being a real castle, but the flying should be magic. Make it only able to be dispelled from the focus and make it fall as if feather falling for any amount of height if dispelled, which is already pretty standard for dispelled flying stuff.
4. Probably require that every castle have its own designated "Lord" who is a different person. If there's no Lord, the castle comes to rest, but control is significantly easier to gain from an uncontrolled castle and probably set up something for a successor as in the current version.

I think if those are addressed (or it's otherwise mitigated) this will be a much more reasonable spell. I'm totally fine with creating an unstoppable flying fleet with a week or month of level 9 spells, but it should still be an investment. --Undead_Knave (talk) 09:02, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Never really known much about focuses/foci and what have you, but I am open instituting one if there are good ideas on what it should be. Also down to limit the number of castles to either one per caster or designating that it has to have a liege as suggested above. This would at least go a long way towards getting rid of the "flocks of castles" scenario presented previously. - TG Cid (talk) 12:26, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
There are a few choices I see for possible foci. A big, but relatively inexpensive crystal (like a 5' crystal sphere) for the castle's heart, a scepter or a crown or some other traditional lordly symbol, or a throne. The other suggestion I'd have for it would be - ya know - a castle. My main thought right now is 1) one of the above foci, AND 2) a castle OR 3) enough money or materials for a castle. I'm fine with even taking some time in advance to blow some Wall of Stone spells to get a lot of good stone, but that's a different investment. --Undead_Knave (talk) 04:33, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
