Talk:Magehänder (3.5e Prestige Class)

I want to start by saying that I really like this class to the point that I created an account just to ask for some clarifications. First: Mage slap and Giant mage hand. They are described as melee attacks so it would be normal to assume that you use your normal BAB and strength (or dexterity if you have weapon finesse). I still want to ask if you're not meant to use your caster level instead of BAB and your caster stat instead of str/dex like with Telekinesis. I do this because it uses a mental stat for damage. Same ability, different question: It just describes that you can manifest a giant mage hand as a swift action but not which action you use to attack. Is that still part of the swift action or is it a standard action? Can you make a full round attack if you have a high enough BAB/caster level? I have two questions about mage thrust: It is described as a melee touch attack and it feels like you should be able to use this in combination with ranged legerdemain, but it's not specified. It says that the target creature is allowed a will save. Does it just use the will save of the mage hand spell, a level 0 spell? That seems kind of weak to me for what is essentialy the main/coolest ability of the prestige class that goes online on level 8 (in the earliest case). It may be of course intended that the save is so low, I just wanted to ask for clarification.

I hope that you will answer my questions and thank you in advance.

Hello, first of all I must say i am glad that you like the class and I will happily answer your questions.
As far as using Caster Level instead of BAB, I intended for BAB but it is a decent houserule to use caster level if your party is pretty strong. In any case Mage Slap is a melee attack, which mean it uses Strength or Dexterity (with Weapon Finesse) for it attack roll. It does add a mental ability to damage, but it in the same vein as many touch spell. As far as a Giant Mage Hand you are correct, it a swift action to summon at which point you can attack with it as if it was a "normal weapon". This mean if your BAB is high enough you can get multiple attacks and it affected by ranged legerdemain.
As far as Mage Thrust your instinct is right, the save is not based on Mage Hand. It can be used with ranged legerdemain. Additionally it being a supernatural ability it ignore spell resistance and has a DC of 10 + 1/2 HD + relevant mental ability modifier. I will make sure to add clarification to the ability to avoid further confusion.
If I missed anything or if you have further question feel free to keep posting here. --Leziad (talk) 11:00, 13 July 2018 (MDT)
Thank you for answering all of my questions. I have indeed one follow up question: You said mage slap is 'in the same vein as many touch spells'. I know this must feel like I want to buff this class, but :: I just ask for clarifications sake: Are mage slap and giant mage hand touch attacks? (I assume they are not, but just to be sure.) -Royal
They are alas regular melee attacks. On another notes since they deal force damage they can strike ghosts and other incorporeal targets without a miss chance. --Leziad (talk) 12:28, 13 July 2018 (MDT)
