Talk:Necrotic Cyst (5e Spell)

Maybe it's just me, but a DC 20 check for a 2nd level spell seems really intense. Why not follow the spell save formula and at worst provide disadvantage. Also, does the creature still get incapacitated if the cyst is removed with magic? I really like that it's a super story board spell, but it seems really bossy for a 2nd level spell. Even Bestow Curse is pretty benign compared to this "Bestow Cancer".--Gr7mm Bobb (talk) 14:48, 7 December 2017 (MST)

This spell was intended as a compromise between Hex and Bestow Curse; so i'm surprised you consider it fiercer than Curse. I'm not sure what you mean by "bossy", the spell just lays out all the various methods by which it can be cured after the victim has failed their initial save.
  • It's a magical effect, you could use dispel magic. This is also true of bestow curse.
  • It's cured by anything that removes diseases. Bestow curse is removed by anything which cures "curses".
  • It's a concentration spell that ends if the caster loses concentration, that works until it's cast as at a higher level. This is also true of bestow curse.
  • It's counted as possession by an undead creature. Can't prevent/treat Bestow Curse this way.
  • It can be excised by a difficult & dangerous medical treatment. Can't treat Bestow Curse this way.
Overall it's easier to remove than bestow curse would be. The incapacitation and possible death are only risks when attempting surgery. I could remove the option for mundane medicine checks to cure the disease but I'm not sure that does anything but make the spell stronger (by removing a way to ameliorate the condition). It's also concentration-free a whole spell level earlier than bestow curse, and on that point I'm already a little uncertain. Vaegrim (talk) 16:18, 7 December 2017 (MST)
Ok, been trying to find a way to say stuff without a foot-mouth moment, not working. My intention of the word "bossy" was something like this. It felt like by explicitly stating that there was a check to remove it, it was telling the whole table that removing a tumor (magical or otherwise) is not something that is possible unless it is otherwise stated. But this could easily have been me misreading words + intention. I think to alleviate this sort of confusion, try and express that even though surgery is normally always a thing people can think of, this particular tumor has a set DC, downtime and failure threshold. I like that it is more easily removed than a curse, it makes sense. I think it could do well from concentration removal being limited to 5th level as those slots are uncommon. I have also noted that the 1d4 only kicks in when an attack roll from a necromancy spell or undead melee attack lands on the infected. In that regard, it could actually benefit from having the damage become 1d6 or even 1d8 allowing it to behave much like a specific version of curse. I hope some semblance of reason and logic can be found from these mad ramblings.--Gr7mm Bobb (talk) 20:22, 10 December 2017 (MST)
