Talk:Refresh Spellcasting (3.5e Variant Rule)

Thought Experiment[edit]

It originally started out as an attempt to convert completely fractured and rebuilt rule into something functional, which at time of writing is a mess of a system. I started with the base idea of being able to refresh spells "on the go" and try and keep it from being broken-spells-all-the-time, as well as broken-what-do-you-mean-it-takes-80-years-to-prepare-Meteor-Swarm. I always try to shoot for UNDER wizard level but I wasn't able to as an inherent part of this, it's a boost. So at least I am hoping it's not a game breaking boost. Who knows, maybe it's suitable for Tome and other high powered stuff. I do like the idea of lower level spells becoming easier to cast as you get stronger, and by that time the fact you can spam Color Spray no longer means anything when you need the high saving throws and superior effects of higher level spells. Anyway I think it captures at least some of the spirit of what SpazChaos was originally going for, yet showing that you can make the idea work. But it is not easy.

I gladly accept advice on the matter. I post things on this Wiki so I can get the approval of others and in doing so, have confidence that my stuff is worth its mustard. If anyone finds something grievously wrong, by all means its in my best interests to change it for the better. -- Eiji-kun 07:21, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

I like this, but I'm not sure about the full list casters, more specifically the Cleric and Druid, who also fall under that category. Would access to the Spell Compendium mean that Clerics, Druids, and to a lesser extent Rangers and Paladins suddenly have a massive boost in available power over the small list guys that don't get expanded on, like the already mentioned Dread Necromancers?--Change=Chaos. I would think any DM who allowed this variant would not allow Spell Compendium outside of researching spells. --Havvy 23:46, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Clerics are prepared casters. Full-list casters refer to things like beguilers, dread necromancers, and warmages. -- Eiji-kun 01:06, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

When you start out with only 1st or 0th level spells, you only get one or two per day as per the time to recharge. This kind of makes spellcasters useless at lower levels, no? --Havvy 01:39, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

"Regardless of how many spells were expended, the typical 8 hours of sleep and 1 hour of preperation refreshes all spell slots as normal. " -Eiji --Foxwarrior 01:51, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
