Going through the class[edit]

Alrighty then, let's go through this class. Stream of consciousness sort of thing, going through it piece by piece and giving my impressions.

  • Okay, so ... d12 hit points, heavy armor and shields proficiency, and no light armor proficiency? No proficiency with any weapons? But you start with a ... broadsword? What's a broadsword? And you have proficiency with armor but don't start with any? Something feels off here... Also, what's a "dungeons" pack?
  • Alright, four class features at first level. I know that 5e tends to frontload class features, but that feels a bit much. Still, let's go through them one by one.
  • Fighting style - why not give the usual names? Do you want them to stack with the usual fighting styles? Honestly, just copy-paste the text for the fighting styles you'd like them to have here. Some of them don't really make much sense.
  • Martial Arts... where is it?
  • Background - Why is this here? It wasn't in the features list. Sense not made, but... free resists to some of the most common types of damage, increased speed, and darkvision? Feels a bit much. The cursed thing feels like it should come from a story arc, not just something you get when you randomly multiclass into this. Also, how is this a negative? "LOL, I'm now immortal, even if I'm all bad on the inside" is a plus, not a minus. And are you telling people what age they should be? headtilt And "lost power" means and does nothing at this point.
  • Demonic Regen - why not "regeneration"? "Regen" doesn't seem like a proper word to me, unless it's a name of a person or place, but then it feels weird. Plus, compare this to what fighters get at first level. Let's be kind and say the class has only a +2 Constitution bonus at first level. That's 4d6+8 (22 on average) healing per day, without dipping into hit dice. Too strong as is. Finally, it doesn't say what kind of rest is needed to get it back.
  • Unarmored Defense - not much to say. Barbs get it. But you get heavy armor instead. Probably won't see much use out of it.
  • Full Counter - feels hella complicated. You must be armed but you have no proficiency in weapons. You automatically reflect enemy attacks. No save, no check, no nothing. Just reflect that fireball doing double damage automatically. Need to put a lot of work into balancing this.
  • Reckless Attack - meh, barbarians get it, it's fine.
  • Extra Attack - why does this get more attacks per turn than a fighter, a class whose only real "thing" outside of subclass features is attacking more often, and earlier at that? If you're giving them everything else, need to heavily nerf this.
  • Demonic Rage - replace the 1st and 4th sentences with "You can use either a bonus action or reaction to activate this feature". What are levels of demonic rage? What are manifestations? What's this about axes and claws? Why is it talking about level 1? I should be able to understand a feature and its progression entirely from its entry, but I can barely make heads or tails out of this.
  • Hell Blaze - damage boost. Why does this have a weird duration? What are these levels again?
  • Sacred Treasure Lostvayne? - why is this a feature? Do two people with this class get the same weapon? How does this work? Why would you gain advantage on your attacks? How is this even supposed to work?

There are a bunch more class features, but I think I've gone deep enough that I've made my point. This class needs a rework, both from syntax and balancing perspective. My suggestion? Make it a barbarian subclass. You're already giving them a bunch of things that barbarians get, like a rage mechanic, reckless attack, and more. Heck, even reflavoring Zealot might work for this. But regardless, it doesn't work as is. --Ghostwheel (talk) 12:39, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
