OH YEAH[edit]

So, I created this so my Lich with Undead Leadership is able own a lot of 1st-level undead minions that are not mindless. The closest available thing to what I was looking for was a +1 LA. The main things I want:

  • Undead
  • Mindfull
  • +0 LA

I just added the mind link because I liked the idea. It does not benefit the creature in any way (in fact, I think it hampers him a lot)

What is your idea of them having an ability that makes them explode on command (or when killed not by their creator), dealing negative damage in a 5-foot radius? The Dire Reverend 05:13, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

This reply is kinda long overdue, but as long as they don't gain immunity to mind-affecting effects when they are sentient (that should really come from being mindless and not being undead) LA +0 is fine. And although it definitely needs to scale better with level, the Destruction Retribution feat (from Libris Mortis) should allow you to make them blow up on destruction. The unliving weapon spell (probably from the same book) also does that. Not that either of those are necessarily the solution, but they're probably a reasonable place to start. You could make a feat that gives that as well, if you like, or integrate it in probably without too much cause for LA (1d6 points of damage per CR of the Unhallowed Minion in a 5-foot radius is fine by me). - TG Cid 14:27, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

Necrotic Sacrifice's Balance[edit]

I don't know how overpowered the Necrotic Sacrifice ability would be. Can people let me know what they think about it? The Dire Reverend 09:58, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

As I alluded to above, it's not really that bad. The cure/inflict line of spells suck pretty much as a rule; it could probably be even more damage (although possibly confined to within 5 feet of them) without any big issue. 1d6 per two CR within 20 feet is probably fine. - TG Cid 14:29, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
Would it be a good idea to simplify the ability by saying 1d6 Negative Energy Damage per two levels instead of linking all the inflict spells? The Dire Reverend 03:38, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
I think it would. Not only that, but it also scales much more reasonable while still being effective enough as a death throes ability for minions. If it were a stronger creature, I might say it justifies even more damage since 10d6 at CR 20 is by no means a lot, but chances are since it's LA +0 you're probably OK with 1 per 2. - TG Cid 16:41, 24 July 2011 (UTC)
So I feel that Necrotic Sacrifice is currently worded poorly. Can someone suggest a better wording for it? The Dire Reverend 05:48, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
"When an Unhallowed Minion is destroyed, it automatically explodes, dealing 1d6 points of negative energy damage at Challenge Rating 1 and an additional 1d6 at every odd-numbered CR to all creatures within 10 feet of the minion." That's really about all you need, in my opinion. Action expendtiture shouldn't be an issue for a death throes ability, so making it automatic is fine in my book. There's also no particular reason why they can't all work in conjunction on the same round. Since they're all dealing negative energy damage, they'll never chain explode in an unfair way, so that's not really an issue. - TG Cid 16:05, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Is it a good idea to do CR instead of HD? The Dire Reverend 19:38, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
It definitely is more appropriate that way, I think. Lots of undead have HD extremely disproportionate to their Challenge Rating; it makes for a bad combination in practice. - TG Cid 05:39, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
