Apprenticed to a wizard at a young age, Dorian never got along with his master. The elder mage demanded rote memorization and rigorous practice of "the fundamentals", but Dorian just liked playing pranks with illusions and enchantments. Eventually, he gave up on getting along with his mentor, and, with the help of a disguise kit he scrounged up, snuck away to a magical college where (at first) he posed as a half-elven noble. By a combination of evasive wordplay and the false promise of forthcoming tuition payments, dropping and inventing personas as needed, he managed to get a decent education focused on the magics that interested him. Several years later, once he was satisfied with what he'd learned (and began to feel in danger of being caught), he snuck his name (actually a pseudonym which he's taken as his real one) onto the list of the graduating students, and left with his degree before they could discover the deceit. He made a living doing whatever sorts of work came to him, supplemented by cons when work is slow. Eventually, he found his way onto the crew of the Vagrant as a stealth specialist and a supporting member of the boarding party.
