The planet of Cala'diel revolves around a single star, named Io, and it takes 280 days to complete one revolution. Cala'diel rotates on its axis exactly like Earth does and has a twenty four hour long day. Cala'diel has two moons, named Tiamat and Bahamut. They are both nearly the same size, about 1/13th the size of Cala'diel. Tiamat is red, looking much like Mars does; and Bahamut is greyish, having an appearance much like Earth's moon. They act like Earths moon and go through phases. Both share the night sky together, and both take fifty six days to complete a full phase cycle.
Tracking the years on Cala'diel is done using the terms BD and GD. BD stands for "Before Divide" and GD stands for "Great Divide". Years count back from one when using BD and forward when using GD.
The methods used on Cala'diel to track time are as follows:
- 280 days a year
- 10 months a year
- 28 days a month
- 24 hours in a day
Tracking the current month is done by using the phases of the two moons. When Tiamat is considered full, Bahamut would be considered new. This means when Tiamat can be fully viewed, Bahamut would not be viewable. It then takes twenty eight days for Tiamat to be considered new, and Bahamut to be full. Every twenty eight days when a moon becomes full, a new month begins. If the month began with Tiamat in full view, it would then be a month named after a dragon Tiamat created. If the month began with Bahamut in full view, it is a month sharing the name of a dragon Bahamut created.
The order of the months are as follows:
- Ndra
- Cazgo
- Fangdur
- Landero
- Ranthur
- Elath
- Balro
- Aurorum
- Vagodor
- Malkura
So the fourteenth day of the sixth month in the current year would be written - 14 Elath 252 GD.
Seasons:
- Malkura, Ndra and Cazgo are considered Winter months
- Fangdur and Landero are considered Spring months
- Ranthur, Elath and Balro are considered Summer months
- Aurorum and Vagodor are considered Fall months
Dates:
- 1 Fangdur - Vernal Equinox. (First day of spring)
- 20 Landero - Summer Solstice. (First day of summer)
- 6 Aurorum - Autumnal Equinox. (First day of fall)
- 17 Malkura - Winter Solstice. (First day of winter)
