Talk:Power Strike (3.5e Feat)

Ratings

Ghostwheel is neutral on this article and rated it 2 of 4.
First off, this is mostly a vertical increase in power, which I dislike. Second, there are flavorful reasons that Power Attack is a thing. This makes it largely irrelevant when it's quite a good feat as-is.

While better than its original incarnation, I find it to be a little too strong. Having done the math (a long time ago, but I still did it back then), I found the best line to follow was the one on this page.

I don't understand the second part of the rating to be honest... it pretty much the same flavor as power attack except it a little more versatile. --Leziad (talk) 22:22, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Part of the mechanical reasons, for example, is that you can get up to +7 AC with a +5 heavy shield, which is a huge difference on the RNG. The difference in damage between two-handers and one-handers is fairly negligible at higher levels (+6), while the difference in AC is a much bigger deal. With this feat, it makes two-handers virtually a non-option from a mechanic perspective. --Ghostwheel (talk) 22:29, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
I was not satisfied with the previous version of this feat, so I changed it. As for two-hander this is a good point that I did not considered. Although I admit I do see the higher damage (1d8 for longsword, 2d6 for greatsword as well as the 1.5x str for two-hander) as generally superior. I will ponder about it. --Leziad (talk) 22:43, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Note that now it gives +40 damage at level 20 per attack for a -3 penalty. Bit much IMO. See the change in my rating. --Ghostwheel (talk) 07:27, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
What about just doubling base weapon damage (not str or enhancement bonus)? This give an advantage to two-hander because of their high base weapon damage and is more consistent across the board. I mean at low level the -3 hurt a lot more than at level 20, but the bonus damage is much more significant and thus worth the risk. There problem with size optimization abuse, but these are broken anyway so there nothing I can really do about that. --Leziad (talk) 21:48, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
Add in a caveat about size increases (does not stack with, good for getting extra damage without having to have a wizard enlarge you), and I think that's excellent. Makes it different, rather than better, than Power Attack. At higher levels you can triple (+8 BAB) it, and then quadruple it (+15 BAB), but ONLY for the first attack per round. --Ghostwheel (talk) 22:07, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
Oh that sound good, I like it. Will apply changes shortly. --Leziad (talk) 22:30, 28 March 2015 (UTC)
