Canin, LargeEdit

Canin look like an anthropromorphic version of a dog. The exact appearance will vary depending on what breed they are.

PersonalityEdit

Canin are generally friendly. They are extremely loyal to their friends, often to a fault. Large Canin are very friendly, although their size can be somewhat intimidating. They are the hardest workers of the Canin and love a hard day's labor.

Canin are an extremely diverse race. In addition to the basic race, there are also several different breeds. When creating a Canin character, you can stick with the basic race or choose a breed and apply it like a mini template, changing a few abilities and other aspects. I left the names of the breeds the same as they really are (mostly for simplicity), so name changes may be required. Just use whatever name would be the best fit for your setting

Alaskan Malamute|[1]: Alaskan Malamutes are powerhouses, known for hauling heavy loads for long distances. They are not as fast as the Husky, but they are larger and stronger. They are independent, highly intelligent, and resourceful. Malamutes love humanoids, but have a high prey drive and may chase smaller creatures. They are very affectionate toward their friends and family and love to play. Malamutes are very energetic and seem to be unaware of their own strength. They are generally fairly quite creatures, chiming in when they have something to add to the conversation or just want to say “Wooo!”.

Doberman Pinscher|[2]: Dobermans are intelligent, alert, and tenaciously loyal. They are driven, strong, highly intelligent, good natured, and stubborn. They are intimidating and fearless creatures, willing to defend their friends and family. Due to a few bad apples, they have been stereotyped as vicious and aggressive, with many people viewing them as villainous or at the very least a minion of a villain. While they do have some aggressive tendencies, they are not as bad as people think and are trying to overcome this stereotype.

German Shepherd|[3]: German Shepherds are highly intelligent Canin, considered be the third smartest breed behind only the Border Collie and the Poodle. They are extremely loyal to those they care about, but are suspicious toward strangers and are known for being overprotective. This has lead to them having a reputation for being aggressive (not entirely true, but the general public is leery of them). They often take jobs in law enforcement, either militia or city guards

German Shorthaired Pointer|[4]: German Shorthaired Pointers are intelligent, bold, boisterous, eccentric, friendly, willing, enthusiastic, and affectionate. They are incredibly quick, great swimmers, and have an astounding jumping ability. GSPs love interacting with humanoids, especially children.

Golden Retriever|[5]: Golden Retrievers are known for being kind, friendly, and confident. They are extremely personable, making them popular with humanoids of all races. They are also highly intelligent. They are considered to be the fourth smartest Canin breed overall, but the intelligence of individuals varies wildly. In fact, Golden Retrievers have two levels of intelligence: Super Smart and Dumb as a Brick. To determine which one your character is, roll a 50/50 chance at character creation and apply the result. Golden Retrievers of either intellect level love to work and do not know their own limits. In fact, if allowed to they will work until they collapse from exhaustion.

Greyhound|[6]: Greyhounds are gentle, intelligent, docile, easygoing, lazy, and calm. They are are affectionate toward those they care about, can be aloof or indifferent toward strangers. They do not need a great deal of exercise as they are built for sprinting rather than massive endurance. Greyhounds are the fastest of the Canin. but automatically apply the Canin Scent Hound Template at character creation

Labrador Retriever|[7]: Labradors are very friendly, kind, pleasant, outgoing, and intelligent creatures. They are fun-loving, strong willed and, virtually fearless. They are curious and exploratory and love company, following both people and interesting scents for food, attention, and novelty value. Due to their intelligence, they are capable of intense single-mindedness and focus if motivated or their interest is caught. Labs are surprisingly stealthy for their size and have a tendency to “vanish”, wandering off without telling anyone when something catches their attention.

Rhodesian Ridgeback|[8]: Rhodesian Ridgebacks are loyal, intelligent, and somewhat aloof to strangers. Ridgebacks are strong-willed, intelligent, and many seem to have a penchant for mischief, though loving. They are protective of their friends and families. They are experts in hunting lions. Additionally, despite their size, they are uncannily stealthy. Ridgebacks are light on their feet and move quietly with little effort. It is not uncommon for someone to turn around and find a Ridgeback standing right behind them who was on the other side of the room just seconds ago.

Rottweiler|[9]: Rottweilers are good-natured, placid in basic disposition, very devoted, obedient, biddable and eager to work. Their appearance is natural and rustic, their behaviour self-assured, steady and fearless. They react to their surroundings with great alertness. They are calm, confident and courageous creatures with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. A Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in its environment. It has an inherent desire to protect home and family, and is an intelligent Canin of extreme hardiness and adaptability with a strong willingness to work.

Weimaraner|[10]: Weimaraners are energetic and have great endurance and stamina. They are friendly yet assertive, obedient yet headstrong, fearless yet sensitiveThey love interacting with humanoids, having a strong desire to work with them.

Physical DescriptionEdit

Describing an average canin is difficult due to the wide variety of them. Canin come in many “breeds” (as many as dogs do in fact) and each breed can vary greatly in size. They can be as smaller than a gnome or larger than a troll and everywhere in between. Canin place great value in honesty, integrity, and loyalty. Like dogs, Canin are fiercely loyal to their friends. Some are loyal to a fault. However, if one betrays or severely violates a Canin’s moral code, it is possible to lose their loyalty, but only if the act was severe enough to destroy the friendship (something that Canin do not take well at all). Evil Canin are extremely rare. The few that exist (that aren’t undead or, in one extremely rare and tragically ironic case, a werewolf) are that way because of tragic circumstances in their past, usually multiple instances of abuse or betrayal by those they trusted. Most Canin are hard working and quite happy to do physically demanding jobs, although some of the larger breeds are known to be a bit lazy. Canin seem to have a readiness to fight inversely related to size. The smaller the Canin, the more feisty and ready for a fight they seem to be (although most will end up hiding behind a larger friend when the one they challenge seems to accept). Smaller breeds of Canin also seem to have more dominant personalities. It is not uncommon to see a group of troll sized Canin taking orders from a gnome sized one. Their senses of hearing and smell are extraordinary, making them excellent trackers and leading more than a few to pursue the career of a woodsman or a bounty hunter. There are too many breeds of Canin to stat each one individually, but they can be easily divided into five categories: Toy, Miniature, Standard, Large, and Giant. While they are all the same species, some of the racial features may differ between the different categories. Most will be the same, but attributes will differ. Large Canin are the second largest of the Canin. They are skilled hunters and hard workers, enjoying a hard day’s labor. When creating a Large Canin character, you can either choose a breed for your character to be or just stick with the basic race and call yourself a mutt.

RelationsEdit

Canin get along with most of the other races. They are especially friendly with humans. Dwarves find them to be a bit clingy for their tastes, but generally enjoy their company overall and admire their work ethic. Canin are a bit leery of half-orcs, but are more open minded than other races and are willing to give individuals a chance, often warming up to them. They dislike the drow, orcs, and other monstrous evil races for their cruel ways, but are sometimes willing to give individuals a chance to prove themselves.

  • Humanoid (Anthro)
  • Large: As a Large creature, a canin, large takes a -1 size penalty to Armor Class, a -1 size penalty on attack rolls, a +4 size bonus on special attack (bull rushes, grapples, overruns, and trips) checks, and a -4 size penalty on Hide checks, but it uses larger weapons than humans use, and its lifting and carrying limits are twice of those of a Medium character. They have a space and reach of 10 feet.
  • Canin, Large base land speed is 40 feet.
  • +2 Racial Bonus on Spot checks
  • +4 Racial Bonus on Listen checks

  • Natural Attack (Ex): Bite dealing 1d8+1.5x Strength Modifier Damage
  • Chocolate Vulnerability (Ex): Chocolate is bad for Canin. If ingested, it is treated as a Poison, specifically Black Adder Venom with a DC of 20
  • Great Endurance (Ex): Large Canin are hard workers and used to extended labor intensive activities. They can keep going for longer periods of time than other creatures and carry heavier loads more easily. When carrying a medium or heavy load, Large Canin reduce their Armor Check Penalties by 1 per 5 HD (minimum of 0), no longer increase their Armor Check Penalties for carrying a Medium or Heavy Load, no longer lose any of their Dexterity Bonus to Armor Class for carrying a Medium or Heavy Load, and can run at the normal x4 speed. Additionally, they can now run for a number of minutes equal to their Constitution Score before they have to start making Constitution checks to see if they must stop running and only have to make another check every minute.
  • Intellectual Sensory (Ex): Canin use their Intelligence Modifier on Spot, Listen, and Survival checks instead their Wisdom Modifier.
  • Smart Wits (Ex): Canin use their Intelligence Modifier instead of their Wisdom Modifier on Will Saves
  • STUPID DOG! (Ex): Smart as they are, Canin are known for their lack of common sense. They have a tendency to do something without thinking things through, including things that most people would not do out of simple common sense. Examples include picking a fight with a creature significantly bigger and stronger than yourself (adventurers don’t count since that’s part of their job), tasting a strange looking food-like object in the middle of a dungeon, testing a trap discovered by the Rogue to see what it does, etc. Whenever a Canin has the urge to do something that is considered by most to be a bad idea by common sense, they must make a Will Save (DC 15 +1 per round that they remain in the area with the temptation still around) to resist. If the save fails, they must do whatever it is that they want to do. Only being physically restrained by their companions will prevent the action, allowing for another save to resist the urge. When STUPID DOG! comes into play, Smart Wits does not apply and they roll the Save using their Wisdom Modifier as normal
  • Automatic Languages: Common

  • Favored Class: Ranger
