The Dragon highlords were the commanders of the Dragonarmies during the War of the Lance appointed by Queen Takhisis. There was one highlord for each of the 5 Dragonarmies and one highlord who was given the crown of power and subsequently renamed the emperor of Ansalon. To attain the rank of highlord Dragonarmy officers used whatever means weere necessary.

Kitiara Uth Matar, known as the Blue Lady to her troops, was the highlord of the blue dragon army. Feal-Thas, a dark elf, was the highlord of the white dragon army. The highlord of the red dragon army was originally the human Verminaard, but after he was destroyed in the revolt in Pax Tharkas by the Tanis Half-Elven and Sturm Brightblade the goblin fewmaster Teode was eventually given the vacant position. The highlord of the black dragon army was the half human and half ogre Lucien of Takar. Salah Kahn, one of the desert-dwelling nomads of the plains of dust, was the Highlord of the green dragon army.

The title of Emperor of Ansalon was given to the human mage Ariakas. He held his position until Tanis Half-Elven, with the help of the now black robed mage Raistlin Majere, struck him down when the dark queen herself was to enter the mortal plane through her temple in Neraka. Subsequently after that event it was said the Kitiara laid claim to the crown of power but also after the event the dragon armies were too busy fighting amongst themselves to once again attack Ansalon.
