The Malchus is similar to a longsword in length and weight and is a compromise between the functionality of a sword with the cleaving capacity of an axe: as a chopping and slicing oriented weapon, the Malchus characterized by a thick and wide single-edged blade, straight or slightly curved, usually getting wider and wider towards the tip, balanced quite further on from the grip towards the tip and capable of delivering crude slashing blows. Some models of Malchus can be considered the martial version of the poor man’s simple “Langes Messer” (long knife), since it can feature a similar grip and guard shape. However, many models of this weapon presents a more elaborate crossguard with a spherical pommel, similar to a longsword’s crossguard (In that case, it usually corresponds to the typical “one-handed cleaving falchion” of the Middle Ages). The Malchus is typically used by professional men-at arms and knights, often against their lowers on the battlefield.
