Unit: A commander is in charge of a unit of troops. A unit is treated similarly to a swarm in the respect that it is a group of creatures. Its type is humanoid and you can choose any subtype of an ECL 1 humanoid creature.

Unit Traits

A unit always acts on the same initiative as the commander and will lose morale and flee if the commander is unable to direct it.

A unit has no clear front or back and no discernible anatomy, so it is not subject to critical hits or flanking. Reducing a unit to 0 hit points or below causes the unit to lose morale and flee (treat it as destroyed). Units are never staggered or reduced to a dying state by damage. Also, they cannot be tripped, grappled, or bull rushed, and they cannot grapple an opponent.

If a spell or effect would incapacitate a single creature in any way so that it would be unable to fight (blindness, stunning, death), a unit receives 1 negative level instead. Otherwise, the unit is unaffected by the spell or effect.

A unit takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells.

A unit rendered unconscious by means of nonlethal damage also loses morale and flees (as if it were killed), but it will regroup if its hit points exceed its nonlethal damage through healing.

A unit is able to share its space with any other creatures.

Units always gain a d10 hit die, regardless of their type and subtypes. They also always have a strong fortitude save, weak reflex save, and weak will save. They have a 3/4 BAB.

Units are large sized when they are between 2 and 8 HD, huge sized between 9 and 15 HD, and gargantuan sized between 16 and 20 HD. Units can squeeze through passages that only allow space for one of their members.

Unit Attack Actions

Units don’t make standard melee attacks. Instead, they get a number of attack actions equal to their HD that they can take any time during the commander's turn (including when the unit is moving).

Unit Melee Attack

Units start out with the ability to make a unit melee attack. A unit melee attack automatically deals 1d6 damage to a creature that shares the same space as the unit.

Unit Base Statistics Block

Here are the base statistics for a unit. As you gain levels, increase the HD of the unit (choosing bonus ability scores, skills, and feats as appropriate).
