At level 1 and even odd level after, the fighter gains martial abilities which can be used during an encounter. The fighter can use a variety of martial abilities in combat, some are at will, others have usage limits per encounter. Some martial abilities gain extra uses or features as the fighter gains more fighter levels

Different martial abilities have fighter level requirements to use or to use their improved versions.

The save against a fighter's martial abilities is DC 10 + 1/2 BAB + strength or dexterity modifier

The fighter can choose which ability score to use when using a martial ability

The martial abilities can not be used with magic or psionics, the fighter can use magic/psionic weapons and armor with the abilities but casting or manifesting does not work with the abilities.

The martial abilities of a fighter represent their ability to adapt to and foil enemy tactics and defenses, ready themselves, adapt to enemy tactics, actions and change in battle, take advantage in battle of openings, weak spots, fallen foes which give new options in battle and focus on a combat situation. The points represent the fighter's stamina, willpower, senses, insight, experience and focus being used.

List of martial abilities:

Level 1 At Will[edit]

Not Out of Reach(Ex): For the duration of the encounter, the fighter can use reach weapons to attack adjacent foes by spending a swift action on their turn or their immediate action to do so which causes the reach weapon to lose their reach but allows it to hit adjacent foes, a second swift or immediate action restores the reach of the weapon.


Step Away(Ex): Once per round if a foe would give you a chance to take an attack of opportunity against them, you may instead take an additional 5 foot step that does not provoke an attack of opportunity or count against your 5 foot step limit.

Countering Field(Ex): For the duration of the encounter, any foe in your threatened area that takes any form of movement provokes an attack of opportunity from you. If using a 5 foot step the foe must make a reflex save or tumble check or provoke as well. The foes also provoke if they leave the area you threaten and can not use the withdraw action to threat the square they are in as no longer threatened by you unless they pass a reflex save or tumble check.

Rough Area (Ex): For the duration of the encounter the fighter by spending a swift or immediate action, any foes passing by any squares the fighter threatens or is adjacent to treat the squares as difficult terrain unless they pass a reflex save or tumble check for each square traveled. This can not be used if the fighter is helpless, unconscious, staggered, confused, nauseated, slowed, fascinated , deafened, exhausted, stunned, dazed, pinned, frightened or panicked.
