Arkayeri[edit]

Sentient flying bugs that see magic in seventeen dimensions

Personality[edit]

The personalities of Arkayeri are sundry and varied. Being able to see magic in great detail does not automatically lead to a studious nature, just like having eyes does not automatically lead to being a sniper or astronomer.

Physical Description[edit]

Arkayeri look like dull black flies, about 2 feet from head to back of torso. When viewed by a spell that can detect magical auras, they are surrounded by an almost infinitely complex shifting pattern of different colors.

Lands[edit]

If there is plenty of rotting material to eat, the Arkayeri are going to live there in profusion. They're generally not very sturdy, so regions that occasionally have mass damage are not going to stay inhabited by low level Arkayeri for very long.

Religion[edit]

Someone with a natural understanding of how magic works doesn't need to ask for help from others just to cast a couple of spells every once in a while.

This doesn't mean that Arkayeri are never religious; it is possible to convert them to a religion. Some cultures of Arkayeri are filled with fanatical wizards and warlocks working in the service of deities such as Pelor or Erythnul.

Language[edit]

Arkayeri speak Arcanic, a language composed of forming 17-dimensional shapes out of magic auras. Characters who have the ability to detect magic can understand it a very small amount if they learn the Arcanic language.

Names[edit]

All Arkayeri names are 17-dimensional shapes, and as such cannot be represented here.

Obviously, people give nicknames to the Arkayeri they meet, although the Arkayeri themselves cannot hear this nickname and so have great difficulty remembering and repeating it.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • -4 Strength, +2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma, -2 Wisdom: Arkayeri are only 2 feet in size, and thus have somewhat weak limbs and small brains.
  • Magical Beast (Augmented Vermin): Arkayeri are descended from ordinary flies, although they have changed a great deal.
  • Small: As Small creatures, Arkayeri get a +1 bonus to attack rolls and AC, a -4 penalty to special attacks, a +4 bonus to Hide checks.
  • Arkayeri base land speed is 5 feet: Arkayeri also have an Average fly speed of 20 feet.
  • Senseless: Arkayeri long ago lost all sense of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. This prevents them from making Spot or Listen checks or gaining the scent special quality, and gives them a -2 penalty to attack rolls. In addition, lack of sight or hearing makes them unaware of good stealth practices, giving them a -5 penalty to Hide and Move Silently checks. Arkayeri are always flat-footed against characters they do not detect.
  • Mage-O-Vision (Su): Arkayeri can see magic in a 17-dimensional spatial representation, although they can only view a 100'-radius region at a time. They can view any region anywhere on the plane or any coexistent plane, but shifting the region a distance of 100' is a swift or full-round action. The Arkayeri can also recenter the region on itself as a swift action. Anything within this region is not entirely obvious to the Arkayeri; it will need to make a Spellcraft check at a -30 penalty opposed by the target's Hide check to detect it, but the Arkayeri can always recognize magical auras. If any part of the region is protected from scrying, the Arkayeri may make one level check per day per protection, with the DC equal to 15 + the caster level of the protection (use a DC of 25 if no caster level is available). Arkayeri cannot see into areas that are impervious to magic, such as antimagic fields. They are also incapable of using Mage-O-Vision while in those areas.
  • Magical Understanding: Arkayeri get a +30 bonus to spellcraft checks.
  • Direct Weave Control: Arkayeri manipulate the essence of magic directly with their puny minds. They do not require somatic or verbal components for any of their spells, spell-like abilities, or supernatural abilities.
  • Automatic Languages: Arcanic.
  • Bonus Languages: Draconic, Celestial, Abyssal, Infernal, Aquan, Auran, Ignan, Terran. Arkayeri do not have voices or hearing, so they can only speak the language by using sound-generating abilities and observing the subtle variations in the auras of magical effects that detect sound.
  • Favored Class: Any Arcane. Their natural understanding of magic helps out here quite a bit.
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1
