Rour De Vrow[edit]

Soul-eating monsters, the Rour De Vrow are often vicious and savage creatures with cruel and isolated cultures. However, this is only natural to them, considering their physiology.

Personality[edit]

A Rour De Vrow is often viscous and instinctual, and always seeking combat, for, you see, a Rour De Vrow does not eat food as most creatures do, but instead must consume recently deceased souls. The surest way to acquire these souls is to kill, naturally, and unfortunately, the more intelligent the being was, the more the Rour De Vrow gains from it's consumption. This leads directly to a race which is structured on murder and war as it's foundation. As a result, Rour De Vrow are most often chased away from any civilizations they might threaten, meaning they generally don't know any society other than their own. All these things together result in the average Rour De Vrow being savage, cruel, and ignorant.

Physical Description[edit]

Standing an average of 5 feet tall, a Rour De Vrow is an unassuming creature, encased in shining, almost porcelain skin that shifts from white in their young years to blue in their middle years, to indigo or, very rarely, dark red in their old years. Their faces look like normal, human faces, but are more akin to masks, with no moving parts, their voices telepathically imparted instead of spoken.

Relations[edit]

There are no relations with Rour De Vrow, not in the traditional sense. Either they are driven out by other races, or they successfully kill and consume every soul that opposes them before they move on. There are a few societies with which they can interact, however. Dark, loathsome places where slavery is a common trade, and a Rour De Vrow can set up flesh farms. Even in these place, a Rour De Vrow is not trusted, as they see anyone as intelligent as they are as a potential meal.

Alignment[edit]

Rour De Vrow are almost entirely evil, with a heavy bent towards chaotic. There are a rare few, however, which learn to consume souls of animals instead of the more "nutritional" intelligent races, and perhaps even find ways to be good or lawful.

Lands[edit]

Rour De Vrow are nomadic, roving about their lands in war bands, seeking anything intelligent so they can kill it and feed. They tend to gravitate towards deserts or beaches, with a few being found in dry mountains. There are a few cities with a small Rour De Vrow populations, and most all of these contain slave markets, which the Rour De Vrow often frequent.

Religion[edit]

Religion is often a thing beyond the Rour De Vrow. They have clearly been created by some demon or dark god, given their manner of eating, yet they worship nothing and no one. The closest they come to a religion is how they believe it is their place to consume who they want when they want.

Language[edit]

Rour De Vrow communicate to others via a strange form of telepathy, which works both ways. Thus, a Rour De Vrow has need of language only when it comes to reading and writing, and generally learns common, but nothing else.

Names[edit]

Rour De Vrow names are made up of exactly five words, each one syllable long, like Rel Hash Vott Ah Loul. Four words are the last words of different ancestor's name, most often father's father, father, mother's mother, and mother, in that order, except the last word itself, which belongs to the individual.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • +4 Strength, +4 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence: Growing up, a Rour De Vrow learns to hunt very early, and is naturally adapted for combat, but can often be ruled by instincts.
  • Monsterous Humanoid
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a rour de vrow has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Rour De Vrow base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Slight Build: The physical stature of Rour De Vrow lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category smaller. Whenever a Rour De Vrow is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as Hide), the Rour De Vrow is treated as one size smaller if doing so is advantageous to the character. A Rour De Vrow is also considered to be one size smaller when "squeezing" through a restrictive space. A Rour De Vrow can use weapons designed for a creature one size smaller without penalty. However, the space and reach of a Rour De Vrow remain those of a creature of their actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject's size category.
  • Trap Soul: If a creature dies inside 30 feet of a Rour De Vrow, the Rour De Vrow can trap that creature's soul within his body just as it departs. If two or more Rour De Vrow are within range to trap a soul, and both attempt to do so, the soul is held in limbo between them, until they somehow decide who gets the soul. The soul is not used up immediately, but is trapped inside the body of the Rour De Vrow, ready to be used however he wishes. A Rour De Vrow can have any number of souls trapped inside himself at any one time, and souls trapped this way do not pass into any form of afterlife, nor can they be resurrected, until they are released from the Rour De Vrow's hold, forcibly or otherwise. If a soul trapped this way is consumed by a Rour De Vrow, it is utterly destroyed, and the creature it belonged to can only be brought back to life by a force like the Wish or Miracle spells, or by the act of a god.
  • Devour Soul: A Rour De Vrow can sit down for an hour and consume a soul it has trapped within it for sustenance. Doing so sustains the Rour De Vrow for 2 hours per point of Int the soul's owner had in life, squared. So a soul with Int 2 will last the Rour De Vrow, 8 hours, almost half the day, while a soul with Int 12 will last the Rour De Vrow 288 hours, or 12 days. This is the only way a Rour De Vrow can sustain itself. Even magical equipment that usually offers sustenance cannot sustain a Rour De Vrow.
  • Feel Soul (Su): A Rour De Vrow can consume a soul, and use the power they gain to gain awareness instead of sustenance. Doing so is a move action, and grants the Rour De Vrow Blindsight out to 10 feet for each 3 points of Wisdom the soul's owner had, rounded down. So a soul with Wis 12 will grant the Rour De Vrow Blindsight out to 40 feet, while a soul with Wis 2 will grant no Blindsight at all. This Blindsight lasts 10 minutes before it wears off.
  • Enflame Soul (Su): Rour De Vrow can consume a soul and use the power they gain just as pure magic, as well. Doing so is a swift action and grants the Rour De Vrow a more powerful Prestidigitation effect. Specifically, it's X times as effective, where X was the Cha score of the soul's owner in life. So, a soul with Cha 12 will allow the Rour De Vrow to slowly lift 12 pounds of material, or heat up 1 pound of material 12 times as fast as a Prestidigitation spell would allow them to. This effect can be used multiple times, and it's effects stack, so eventually, a Rour De Vrow can be able to lift himself via this effect, and grant himself a flight speed, though this would require several Charismatic souls to be used up, and the specific speeds of everything is up to the DM's discretion. This effect lasts 24 hours.
  • Special Telepathy: A Rour De Vrow can communicate telepathically back and forth with any creature within 100 feet of it. Actual words might be exchanged this way, though it is usually just empathic, ideas and notions being traded back and forth in lieu of conversation. If the Rour De Vrow wishes it, he may allow a soul trapped inside him to speak via this telepathy.[*]A Rour De Vrow does not eat, sleep, or breathe.
