This creates a flame superficially similar to ''[[SRD:Continual Flame|continual flame]]'', but black with dark red outlines.  Where that spell creates light forever, this one sheds dark as ''[[SRD:Darkness|darkness]]''.  A continual shade can be covered and hidden but not smothered or quenched.

Darkness spells counter and dispel light spells of an equal or lower level.  This spell also acts as a counter to ''continual flame'', dispelling it without a check (and vice versa).

''Material Component:''  You sprinkle black ash (worth 50 gp) on the item that is to carry the black flame.
