If the target of this spell fails a Fortitude save they are subject to the effects of a polymorph spell which increases their spinal flexibility (if the target had a spine) and grows a maw (or carnivorous teeth in a pre-existing mouth), or modifies an existing jaw to allow it to unhinge. The creature is also struck by a ravenous hunger, and will begin to cannibalize itself. As the creature consumes itself it takes one point of [[SRD:Dexterity|Dexterity]] damage (to a minimum of one Dexterity) and one point of [[SRD:Constitution|Constitution]] damage each round (to a minimum of zero) until its Constitution is reduced to zero and it dies. For each point of Dexterity damage suffered in this manner, the target's movement speeds are reduced by five feet. Fly and burrow speed can be reduced to zero, though the target will retain a base land speed of 5' no matter how much damage it takes in this manner. The target can take no other actions but to feast upon itself, going into a [[SRD:Prone|prone]] position (if physiologically possible) to facilitate this process. 

Creatures without Constitution scores are immune to this spell. Casting ''[[SRD:Greater Restoration|greater restoration]]'' while the creature is still alive stops the hunger but does not reverse the effects. Only after the process is halted can the damage be reversed, with a consecutive castings of ''[[SRD:Regenerate|regenerate]]'' and ''[[SRD:Greater Restoration|greater restoration]]''. A creature with a Dexterity score of one as a direct result of this spell cannot attack or casts spells with somatic components.
