First devised by squads of Amnite battle mages, Staves of Evocation are valued items to those who prefer the magical duel.
A Staff of Evocation boosts the power and effectiveness of all damage dealing evocation spells cast with it as a focus. The staff grants its user a bonus to touch attack rolls made to resolve targeted evocation spells equal to the staff's enhancement bonus, and adds a bonus to damage, save DC and spell penetration to every damaging evocation spell as in the table below.
Enhancement Bonus | Bonus Damage2 | Save DC | Penetration Bonus against SR3 |
---|---|---|---|
+1 | +1d6 | +1 | +0 |
+2 | +2d6 | +1 | +1 |
+3 | +3d6 | +2 | +1 |
+4 | +4d6 | +2 | +2 |
+5 | +5d6 | +3 | +2 |

The bonuses in this table stack with the bonuses granted by feats such as Spell Focus, Spell Penetration, Weapon Focus in magical touch attacks, and Ability Focus.
Attacking with a Staff of Evocation[edit]
The wielder of a Staff of Evocation gets access to a special attack option that functions as a manufactured ranged weapon. He may fire a targeted magic blast from the staff as an attack action, with an effective range of Close (25 ft. + 5 feet per two caster levels) and a base damage of 1d6 untyped, using the higher of the user's Intelligence and Charisma bonuses to modify the attack and damage rolls. The magic blast's critical range is 20/×2. This is a basic signature damaging spell, can be used at will, and does not take up any spell slots.
If the magic blast misses the target's full AC but hits its touch AC, the target takes half damage from the attack and may make a Reflex save to negate the damage entirely.
The wielder of the staff may use its magic blasts to make iterative attacks on a full attack action, which uses the user's caster level as a replacement base attack bonus.
The Staff of Evocation's attack is the equivalent of a spell of a level equal to the staff's enhancement bonus, and as such enjoys the staff's bonuses to attack rolls, damage, save DC and spell penetration (see above table).
Statistics[edit]
A Staff of Evocation is treated as a magical quarterstaff, both sides of which have an enhancement bonus equal to the staff's bonus. Staves of Evocation with an enhancement bonus higher than +5 are epic, follow epic pricing rules, and the staff's added benefits with regards to evocation spells continue to increase linearly (+1 to attack rolls and +1d6 bonus damage with evocation spells per point of enhancement bonus, +1 to evocation spell DC at every odd point of enhancement bonus, and +1 to spell penetration checks at every even point of enhancement bonus).
Prerequisites: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, caster level equal to staff enhancement bonus ×3.
Cost: 5,000 gp (+1), 20,000 gp (+2), 45,000 gp (+3), 80,000 gp (+4), 125,000 gp (+5).
