The weapon deals an additional 1d6 damage to any living creature struck, as long as said creature has blood (I.e., oozes and plants don't count). This extra damage is not subject to damage reduction or energy resistance, but spell resistance applies. The weapon overcomes damage reduction as if it were a magic weapon, and for every 5 points of extra damage dealt, you gain one Vitalis point if you possess a Vitalis pool.
