1. See Damage Increases by Size to calculate the damage for a weapon larger than Medium or smaller than Small.
2. Weight figures are for Medium weapons. A Small weapon weighs half as much, and a Large weapon weighs twice as much.
3. When two types are given, the weapon is both types if the entry specifies "and", either type (player's choice at time of attack) if the entry specifies "or", or each end of the double weapon is a different type if the entry specifies "/".
4. The hp value given is for Medium armor, weapons, and shields. Divide by 2 for each size category of the item smaller than Medium, or multiply it by 2 for each size category larger than Medium.
The broad longsword, usually called broadsword, is similar to a common longsword in lenght, since it typically features a double-edged blade and a cruciform hilt; however, as the name suggests, the Broadsword has a wider and heavier blade (it weights almost as much as a bastard sword) wich enhances the cutting capacity of the weapon over the thrusting attitude. For that reason, its blade has edges running parallel most of the sword lenght, except for the tip, and even the tip of the sword is broader and more spatulate than the tip of a longsword.
The broadsword usually has a basket hilt to protect the wielder’s hand, but some are made without the basket hilt.
The broadsword is often used by specialized troops, usually cavalry soldiers, to deliver powerful blows and massacre enemies.
A broadsword is too large to use effectively in one hand without special training; thus, it is an exotic weapon. However, it's not as long and heavy a bastard sword, so a character with 12 of strenght (instead of 13) can get the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat for a broadsword suited for him. A character without the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat can use a broadsword two-handed as a martial weapon, or one-handed with a penalty of -2.
A broadsword counts as a Longsword or as a Bastard Sword (but not as these two last weapons together) for the purpose of any of the following feats: Greater Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Specialization, Improved Critical, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization: if a character has any of these feats both on the Longsword and on the Bastard Sword, the bonuses of the feats from the two last weapons don't stack within the broadsword.
