1. See Damage Increases by Size to calculate the damage for a weapon larger than Medium or smaller than Small.
2. Weight figures are for Medium weapons. A Small weapon weighs half as much, and a Large weapon weighs twice as much.
3. When two types are given, the weapon is both types if the entry specifies "and", either type (player's choice at time of attack) if the entry specifies "or", or each end of the double weapon is a different type if the entry specifies "/".
4. The hp value given is for Medium armor, weapons, and shields. Divide by 2 for each size category of the item smaller than Medium, or multiply it by 2 for each size category larger than Medium.
The heavy bastard seax, is a heavy hand-and-a-half version of the "seax family": it often used by specialized warriors and expert mercenaries who cannot afford the more expensive bastard sword; a bastard seax has a two-handed grip and it's blade is single-edged and generally straight, or curved slightly towards the tip. The back either curves gently, or with a sharp angle towards the tip, which is located below the centerline of the blade.
The heavy bastard seax is similar to a warsword but slightly lighter and simpler in its profile, so it's not as difficult as the heavy bastard seax in handling: a wielder without martial weapon proficiency can use a heavy bastard seax with two hands as a simple weapon without penalties, or one handed with a penalty of -2 to attack rolls.
The heavy bastard seax counts as a bastard Seax or as a great seax (but not as these two last weapons together) for the purpose of any of the following feats: Greater Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Specialization, Improved Critical, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization: if a character has any of these feats both on the bastard seax and on the great seax, the bonuses of the feats from the two last weapons don't stack within the heavy bastard seax.
If a heavy bastard seax is featured with a simple hand-guard (commonly with a metal bar called "nail" and perpendicularly fixed to his simple cross-guard) it usually costs +10 gp, gives +1 against disarming attempts and is typically known as "heavy bastard messer".
