These vast spires of orichalcum draw upon a refined proteum core to project a massive, spherical shield that can protect entire ground armies. A shield obelisk is fitted with a magitech control console that requires a DC 25 Knowledge (Xeno) check to operate. When unattended, the obelisk hovers in place roughly two feet above the ground, but can be operated with the Pilot skill, using Intelligence instead of Dexterity.
The stats above are for the unattended obelisk. When piloted, it gains the Dexterity score of 5, and the pilot's mental ability scores.
A shield obelisk's spire is five feet wide, square, and 50 feet tall with a narrowing taper, surrounded by a ring-shaped platform 30 feet in diameter. The entire construction weighs approximately 70 tons.
A shield obelisk's purpose in battle is to protect large ground forces with its perimeter shield. A piloted shield obelisk cannot move more than once its hover speed per round.
Arcane Bolt (Sp): When piloted, a shield obelisk can be made to discharge a bolt of raw arcane energy as a standard action once per round to any target inside of the area spanned by its perimeter shield. If an arcane bolt hits the target's AC, it takes full damage, allowing no save. If the bolt misses the target's AC but hits its touch AC, it takes half damage, and is allowed a DC 25 Reflex save to halve the damage yet again.
Magic Immunity: A shield obelisk is immune to any and all spells that allow spell resistance. When targeted by any such spells, it regains 5 shield points per level of the spell cast. Ground warfare units of highly advanced magical societies often deploy squads of support spellcasters purely to maintain the obelisk's shielding, while siege weaponry fires away from behind the safety of its protection.
Perimeter Shield (Ex): A shield obelisk projects a perimeter shield. The shield has strength 50, hardness 30, a range of 200 feet and default recharge rate (1 hp/HD per minute), giving it 1,500 hit points.
The perimeter shield defends everything inside it against most attacks and effects (see perimeter shields for more information), and has an AC of 40 (10 + 30 deflection). Any attacks that fail to hit the AC are harmlessly deflected without damaging the shield.
A shield obelisk is assembled from 50,000 pounds of orichalcum and metal supports, and 100 pounds of refined proteum, requiring successful Craft (metalworking) and Knowledge (architecture and engineering) checks respectively (DC 40). The obelisk costs 225,000 gold pieces to create, which includes 160,000 gp for the body. The creator must be 21st level, have the Craft Epic Magic Arms and Armor feat, and be able to cast arcane spells. Completing the ritual drains 2,600 XP from the creator and requires geas/quest and wish.
