As long as you are aware of the character's alignment, you are always aware of whether or not they can be salvaged, preventing misunderstandings. As a note, this is a frequent occurance for those with the [Evil] subtype, like fiends.
Lastly, as long as you have abilities that can prevent a deadly ability to kill a target, like [[False Swipe (3.5e Feat)|False Swipe]] or [[Zen Warrior Variant(3.5e Feat)|Zen Warrior]], you may unleash lethal tactics without fear or penalty...unless you actually kill them. Then, bad happens.
