Their length classifies them as a [[5e Polearm|polearm]] for the '''''Polearm Master''''' [[SRD5:Feat|feat]]'s {{srd5lc|Opportunity Attack}} {{srd5lc|Reach}} ability (see [[Publication:Player's Handbook (5e)|Player's Handbook (5e)]] p.168).
The longspear is an [[Exotic Weapon (5e Variant Rule)|Exotic Weapon]]<sup>1</sup>. If you are not proficient with this (or any exotic) weapon, you use it at {{srd5lc|Disadvantage}} as well as not adding your {{srd5lc|Proficiency Bonus}}.
