Should you prefer to use standard D&D races (again, the simplified versions are recommended), here is some potential backstory to fit them into a cosmic horror/fantasy setting.

Common Races[edit]

Human[edit]

More or less unchanged from the main Race page. If desired, the campaign could involve no actual human characters, with races like orcs, dwarves, and similar low-magic humanoids as descendants of humans who survived and were transformed by the Last Conjunction.

Ghoul[edit]

A definite must, the Ghouls are descended from humans who managed to survive the worst battles and thrive in wastelands where others perish. Not evil, but pragmatically ruthless and possess a strong hatred of all Fremd servitors, especially elves.

Drow[edit]

The drow could be the most common elves of this setting, descended from early Fremd servitors. They were engineered to be servants of the Creeping Chaos, but many exist in opposition to the Fremd. They tend to be cruel, but less likely to sacrifice enemies to eldritch abominations.

Duergar[edit]

Good dwarven substitutes, humans who were deeply affected by the Fremd. Most Duergar are insane and loyal servitors to the fremd.

Halfling, Jerran[edit]

Mercurian[edit]

Not a standard race, but definitely in line with the horrors of the dreamlands.

Siren[edit]

A substitute for the deep ones, although they probably should resemble them.

Warforged[edit]

Homunculus substitute.
