5e Spells[edit]

This is just a page here I'm putting some experimental ideas for spells in 5e. These will probably be imbalanced at first, and may never reach a balanced state; I'm merely writing them down to get them out of my head.

New Blade Cantrips[edit]

Working on some Blade-type cantrips that aren't just Fire and Thunder. A homebrew material I love and greatly respect has already covered Cold, Necrotic and Bludgeoning with their Freezing, Vampiric and Stone Blade cantrips, so I won't be rehashing those and instead will direct you to check out that document if you like playing warrior-type characters. You can find it titled "Blast from the 4E Past: Warlord and Swordmage Classes" on r/dndnext; It's a great little splatbook to round out the vanilla class roster.

Viper Blade
Transmutation cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 5ft
Components: V, M (A weapon)
Duration: Instantaneous
Casters: Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

With a word, the Warlock's blade took on a sickly green tinge, venom dripping from its jagged edges. She quickly lashed out, striking the orc, and she watched as he crumpled to the ground in pain.

As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell's range, otherwise the spell fails. On a hit, the target suffers the attack's normal effects, and the target must make a Constitution save or fall prone due to the agony of the venom. Targets resistant to poison damage or to the poisoned condition have advantage on their saving throw, and targets immune to poison damage or to the poisoned condition are likewise immune to this spell.

At Higher Levels. At 5th level, the initial attack deals an additional 1d10 Poison damage. This increases to 2d10 at 11th level, and to 3d10 at 17th level.


Caustic Blade
Transmutation cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 5ft
Components: V, M (A weapon)
Duration: 1 Round
Casters: Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

The sorcerer hissed and his mace followed suit, bubbling acid coating its surface and dripping onto the flagstones below. He struck the guard, acid eating away at his flesh, growing each time the sorcerer's allies landed a blow.

As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell's range, otherwise the spell fails. On a hit, the target suffers the attack's normal effects, as well as suffering Acid damage equal to your Spellcasting modifier.

Until the beginning of your next turn, when the target is struck by a weapon attack, that target takes additional Acid damage equal to your Spellcasting modifier.

At Higher Levels. At 5th level, the acid damage of the initial attack increases to 1d4 + your Spellcasting modifier. This increases by 1d4 at 11th and 17th level, to a maximum of 3d4 + your Spellcasting modifier.


Celestial Blade

Components: V, M (A weapon)
Duration: 1 Round
Casters: Cleric, Sorcerer, Wizard

With a shout, the Cleric's hammer flashed with right light, leaving the necromancer reeling.

As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell's range, otherwise the spell fails. On a hit, the target suffers the attack's normal effects, and the target must make a Wisdom save. If the target fails, they subtract 1d4 from all attack rolls and Perception checks checks until the start of your next turn.

At Higher Levels. At 5th level, the initial attack deals an additional 1d8 Radiant damage. The damage increases to 2d8 at 11th level, and to 3d8 at 17th level.
