<-general description->.

Making a Persona User[edit]

<-Strong points and weak points, and effectiveness with party members.->.

Abilities: Charisma is the most important attribute for the Persona User, as their sheer force of personality is what allows them to manifest their Persona in the first place. Other ability scores are dependent entirely on their choice of role - Those who focus on combat probably want Strength, while strategists and skillmonkeys will need Intelligence, and so forth.

Races: Anyone can become a Persona User, but for some reason there aren't many savage races among their number. It's probably because they care more about pillaging and hunting than exploring their true selves. Not a lot of patience for meditation among Orcs or Trolls, after all.

Alignment: All walks of life generate Persona users, though their meditative nature tends to attract more Law than Chaos.

Starting Gold: 3d4×10 gp (75 gp). Introspection doesn't seem to pay well, unless you're soliciting someone else do it while they recline on a specific kind of couch.

Starting Age: Moderate.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Persona User.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Persona Users are proficient with all simple weapons, plus all attacks drawn from their Persona. They are not proficient with any armor or shields by default, but gain additional proficiencies based on their Class Path, found below.

Personification: Persona Users use an alternate Psionics, known as Personification. It functions in all ways like normal Psionics, including granting the Psionic subtype and access to Psionic feats, but there are key differences. Powers are instead called Exactions. Instead of being manifested by spending Power Points (PP), manifesting an Exaction instead causes you to incur Mental Strain (MS). Instead of gaining Psionic Focus, you instead can Manifest your Persona, described below. Powers are drawn from Arcana Mantles, determined by your choice in Arcana.

In order to use an Exaction, you must have your Persona manifested; Anything that causes you to expend a Psionic Focus causes your Persona to de-summon. The DC of any Exaction you manifest is equal to 10 + the Exaction's level + your Charisma modifier.

Power Points/Day: A Persona User’s ability to manifest Exactions is limited by the Mental Strain (MS) he has accrued. A Persona User can incur up to a base daily allotment of Mental Strain is given on Table: The Persona User. In addition, he receives bonus Mental Strain tolerance per day if he has a high Charisma score (see Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Power Points for reference). His race may also provide bonus Power Points, as may certain feats and items. Any time a Persona User permanently gains an increase in Power Points, such as from a feat, prestige class, or their race, the User may elect to instead gain an equal increase in maximum Mental Strain tolerance. Likewise, items that temporarily grant Power Points can instead temporarily increase your maximum Strain (Or reduce how much Strain you have currently accumulated, at your choice).

Mental Strain works in all ways like Power Points, except instead of a pool which shrinks as you manifest powers, you have a tolerance that you build up to as you manifest Exactions - Instead of draining your pool until it reaches 0, you instead add to the meter until it reaches its maximum value. Mental Strain can only be removed by resting for 8 hours, or by certain items. Mental Strain cannot be used to manifest normal Powers, nor can normal Power Points be used to manifest Exactions.

While above 1/4 of your maximum Strain tolerance, but below 1/2 of your maximum Strain tolerance, you are Sickened. While above 1/2 of your maximum Strain tolerance, but below 3/4 of your maximum Strain tolerance, you are Sickened and Fatigued. While above 3/4 of your maximum Strain tolerance, you are Sickened, Fatigued and Exhausted. You cannot manifest an Exaction if you are at your maximum Strain; If you are below your maximum Strain tolerance, but manifesting an Exaction would put you over your maximum Strain tolerance, the Exaction goes off as normal, but you fall Prone and Helpless afterwards. The Helplessness ends after 1 round, but you must stand up from being Prone as normal.

Exactions Known: This is the number of Exactions you may know at each given level. You may only learn Exactions from the Mantles granted to you by your choice in Arcana.

Maximum Exaction Level Known: This column determines the highest level Exaction a Persona User can learn at this level. To learn or manifest an Exaction, a Persona User must have an Charisma score of at least 10 + the Exaction’s level.

Manifest Persona (Su): You have learned to project a manifestation of your true inner self, known as a Persona, and this allows you to manifest your Exactions. Calling forth your Persona is exactly the same as gaining Psionic Focus, except your Persona is summoned into being within Close range of you (25ft, +5ft per two class levels). Your Persona is an extension of yourself, and you are in complete control of it. Summoning your Persona requires an Arcana Focus, often in the form of a card, mask, trinket, dagger, or other small object weighing 1 pound or less. Each Persona User starts play with one of these mostly-mundane items, and if lost or destroyed, it costs 50gp to buy a new one. A Persona User can attempt to summon their Persona without an Arcana Focus, but doing so requires a successful Concentration check with a DC equal to 15 + 1/2 your HD + The number of times you have summoned your Persona without a focus in the same day. So for a 10th-level Persona User who had summoned their Persona three times already, the DC of the Concentration check would be 23 (15 + 5 + 3).

Your Persona is you, and you are it. It functions as an exact statistic replica of you, except:

  • It has the Incorporeal subtype, having a Deflection bonus to AC equal to your Charisma modifier.
  • It is two sizes larger than you, up to Colossal size, and occupies space accordingly.
  • It has no Strength score, instead using your Dexterity score.
  • It acts on your turn, though it has its own separate set of actions.
  • You determine the Persona's exact appearance and weapons. You can give it equipment to use (It has all the same proficiencies you do), but equipment given to it vanishes into your psyche with it when it is dismissed. It can, of course, return this equipment to you at your request. If given equipment, it gains the benefits and penalties of the equipment is has been given, instead of the equipment you're wearing - So if you are wearing a Necklace of Fireballs and give your Persona an Amulet of Natural Armor to wear, it uses the statistics granted by the Amulet of Natural Armor, and does not have the ability to activate the Necklace of Fireballs.
  • All effects the Persona is targeted with that allow a Will or Fortitude saving throw are relayed to you instead of affecting your Persona - Including poisons, diseases, compulsion, death magic, paralyzation and so forth. If the effect allows a Reflex save, your Persona instead makes the saving throw on its own, using all your bonuses, and the effect affects only the Persona, including damage and status effects.
  • The Persona does not possess hit points. Damage dealt to the Persona is instead added to your Mental Strain total, meaning it effectively has hit points equal to your maximum Strain tolerance.
  • Unless otherwise stated, all Exactions you manifest originate from your Persona's space, not your own. This means when you manifest an Exaction, the Persona provokes attacks of opportunity and suffers damage from them if they are successful, and so forth.
