:Multiple.  I actually came up with the base idea on its own, the idea of some sentience-reaving monster.  When trying to decide appearance, I was brought back to that blasted final boss from Cave Story, Ballos, and the whole eye thing, and thought it a fitting motif given that consciousness had much to do about eyes.  When I was looking for a name I came across the term [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theoria Theoria], and was inspired by the "gazing at" interpretation to bring in the eyes.

Multiple. I actually came up with the base idea on its own, the idea of some sentience-reaving monster. When trying to decide appearance, I was brought back to that blasted final boss from Cave Story, Ballos, and the whole eye thing, and thought it a fitting motif given that consciousness had much to do about eyes. When I was looking for a name I came across the term Theoria, and was inspired by the "gazing at" interpretation to bring in the eyes.
Then I had to figure out what its avatar would be, the PCs cannot fight a planet. I thought of Dark Souls and the bloated Oolacie heads, with the swollen cracked red eyes and thought "perfect, something that has a head like that". It was at this point I also realized the whole mind-reaving thing was rather similar to Mass Effect reaper (pre-3, when the storyline was shat on). And I had been playing with the idea this was somehow illithid based anyway, so I was like "I'll go ahead and make them cuttlefish reaper-expies and be blatant about it" and gave them the oolacie eyeballs, which now that I think of it resemble one more metal squid thing, the robots from The Matrix. Which is where I got the image of a floating robot eating people with its tentacles via a vis the Harvester Robot, which is appropriate given its role.
