While it's nothing to write home about, it's not a terrible option in a moderate level game. The restriction to armor category instead of armor type is a welcome bit of gear restriction loosening. |

Armor Focus is almost as bad as Weapon Focus: In a game about looting and collecting randomly rolled items, restricting yourself to a particular type of item is like shooting yourself in the foot.
In some ways this is worse, because the broader category of items for which you receive the bonus means that you're unlikely to lose it unless the DM specifically wants you to: There's a difference between a "situational" bonus and a "DM Prickishness" one. |
