Lich, Tome

A spellcaster who has extended their existence at the expense of their life by stashing away their soul, based on the Tome Revenant.

A lich is a spellcaster who has removed their soul to hide it in some manner of container, typically referred to as a Soul Jar, usually a gem, piece of jewelry, or even actual jar, and hidden it to extend their existence. As their soul has been removed, so too has their lifeforce, making them an undead creature that some would call a mockery of life.

Terminology-- there has been some recent debate about the use of the term phylactery in regards to lichs in D&D. In response to this, the author has chosen to use the term "Soul Jar" as a return to the terminology used in older editions and avoid the potential associations that arise from the term phylactery, which ultimately does not actually have much relation to the lich's soul container anyway.

Creating a Lich

To become a lich, a spellcaster must have had their soul removed and hidden in some form of container. Usually this is voluntary, but it may have been done to them, instead.

Type: The character's type changes to Undead and the character's former type becomes a subtype with the "augmented" modifier. The character also gains the Dark Minded subtype.

Hit Dice: The character's BAB, Saves, and skills are all unaffected. The character must reroll his Hit Points, but every hit die is a d12.

Ability Scores: The character loses his Constitution score, and gains a +2 bonus to one mental ability score of their choice, typically the one used for their spellcasting.

Special Qualities: The character can use a level-appropriate Inflict (X) Wounds effect as an at-will spell-like ability. They also gain turn resistance +2. The character heals completely at the setting of the sun, unless he is in a Tomb or hallowed area. This healing can even bring him back from destruction, but if his body is nailed to the ground (or in a Tomb or hallowed area), he can never come back from the dead by any means until the condition is no longer present. If the character's Soul Jar is destroyed, they no longer heal at sunset. Potentially, their soul can be recovered and re-contained and hidden, but doing so would be the focus of a specific adventure for that purpose and is the province of the DM.
