What is this page for?[edit]

The Rokugan campaign setting, belongs here because it is based not only on the Legend of the Five Rings Collectible Card Game and Legend of the Five Rings Roleplaying Game by the Alderac Entertainment Group, but was also a setting for D&D's 3rd Edition Oriental Adventures. It has its own large Legend of the Five Rings Wiki, where topics specific to Rokugan are covered in more detail than it is likely to achieve here. In order to have access to everything about Rokugan here, I created this page. If you search for anything, that has an article at the Legend of the Five Rings Wiki but not here at D&D wiki, you will be pointed to this list, and you will be provided with a link. Why is this page huge?[edit]

This page is more than a megabyte, three times larger than the largest page that shows up on the Long Pages list. And that's pretty absurd. --Foxwarrior (talk) 08:08, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Do you think that the size will cause problems in opening it? I did not experience problems so far. If there were problems, the page could be split, which would just mean some more work now and in the future. On the other hand, if it does not cause special problems, the page has the inner logic of, well, being the list of all the articles in L5R Wiki, with no subdivision needed, because the page is not meant to be read from top to bottom, but to provide a link for people looking for information about a Rokugan-related topic not covered in D&D Wiki (yet). What do you think? Daranios (talk) 10:18, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
So... basically, this just lists all the pages on another wiki? That seems redundant and silly. --Ghostwheel (talk) 00:15, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
I don't think it's necessarily silly, but we may be able to come up with a better solution for these link pages. Its excessive size actually can be an issue for browsers rendering pages, and it will also take a veeeeery long time to load even on a moderate internet connection. Surgo (talk) 04:16, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Such an excessively large page also puts quite a bit of load on the server...if we can't figure out a better way, I think we should at least break it down a bit. Surgo (talk) 04:29, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Just to repeat why I think the page is neither redundant nor silly: A page like this one allows the search function of our wiki to access all topics covered by related wikis that do not have their own page here (yet). This is the D&D Wiki, so it should function as a gateway to setting-specific wikis. As long as we cannot extend our search function to those wikis (or their "AllPages" pages), or access their search functions somehow, this page makes sense to me. Or to take an example: If I ask myself, wasn't there an Oriental Adventures creature called "Ningyo" in D&D, a search here will (among others) now point me to the information available about it at L5R Wiki. Daranios (talk) 18:36, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Right, I think the resource is good. I just wonder if we can figure out a better way to do it. Not sure if we can extend our search function like that...I'll check it out. Surgo (talk) 19:35, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Worst case page size solution: subpages for each letter of the alphabet to break it up into more manageable chunks without losing search benefits. So "LotFRWA/A", "LotFRWA/B", etc. Not sure how much extra maintenance work that is though. - Tarkisflux Talk 20:30, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
The usefulness of splitting notwithstanding, here an additional idea: Could we get a shortcut to L5R Wiki? If we could replace "[http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/" with e. g. "[[L5R:" in each line, we would already safe a significant amount of data. Daranios (talk) 16:41, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
An interwiki link using the prefix 'l5r' has been setup, and applied to the page.... applied badly anyway. Daranios, you have a setup to make the page lists into pretty links right? Would you mind taking care of the conversion here that I wound up only half doing? - Tarkisflux Talk 22:46, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Great! Done the conversion - thankfully still had my original file. I have made it the uglier version where "l5r:" shows in each line, but which saves a lot of data. If a version with just the article topic as link would be better, please let me know - it would make the page bigger again, though. Daranios (talk) 17:20, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
